The government has decided to build a 225-km-long elevated expressway between Dhaka and Chittagong.

The decision came from a coordination meeting held at the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry yesterday.

“The elevated expressway will run over the Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane highway that are now in progress under Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme at a cost of Tk70,000cr,” said the Road Transport and Bridges minister after the meeting.

The government has already missed several deadlines for upgrading the existing two-lane highway into four-lane one.

The minister said Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane road construction will be completed by May this
year.

Earlier, a senior bureaucrat has given a Powerpoint presentation in front of the prime minister at her office on the proposed Dhaka-Chittagong Expressway.

“The Dhaka-Chittagong elevated expressway is to be the highest costing project ever in the country,” said Obaidul Quader.

A 2013 Asian Development Bank (ADB) study shows that 90% of Bangladesh’s export-import goods are transported on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway. Around 60% of the vehicles using the highway carry goods, while 27% transport passengers.

The Dhaka-Chittagong expressway will begin from Kanchpur, a key entry point to the capital city, and end in Sitakunda on the outskirts of the port city, as per the plan.

“Vehicles will have to move at a speed of at least 100km per hour over the elevated expressway,” according to the design.

Cabinet Secretary Shafiul Alam told the Dhaka Tribune: “The government has already initiated to talk to the investors to construct Dhaka-Chittagong elevated expressway under the PPP scheme.”

The Road Transport and Highways Division sources said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has met Chinese government official in this regard.

Planning Minister AHM Mostafa Kamal visited Jica headquarters in Japan and approached Jica for funding the Dhaka-Chittagong elevated expressway.

Woah!
Even we don't have an all elevated 225 km expressway. Heck, I doubt if even China has an all elevated expressway that long.

If GoB is considering an all elevated expressway it points to two things:
1. Land acquisition is a hurdle in Bangladesh
2. Land over which the expressway is to be built is heavily inhabited
3. GoB wants the expressway built fast to support BD's economy. Because else wise the land acquisition would take time and elevated expressways are modular in construction - can be built quickly.

I guess point 3 is most important. Chittagong and Dhaka are most important economic centers of BD and an expressway built fast will boost the economy and more than pay for itself by increased economic activity over the years.

Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered the construction of a six-lane elevated expressway from Dhaka to Chittagong.

The minister was talking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, where he said that the order was given at Tuesday’s Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) meeting.

The previous plan for the 225-km proposed-expressway was for it to be 30 percent elevated, while the remaining 70 percent would be at-grade, but PM Hasina later ordered the authorities to construct a fully elevated expressway to allow smooth traffic.

The cost of the expressway, including partial elevation and at-grade, was Tk. 27,000 crore, but for the complete elevated expressway, the cost now stands at Tk. 70,000 crore.

The finances for the project will be sought through either a government-to-government process, public-private partnership (PPP) or in the form of foreign assistance, Quader added, saying that planning for a detailed design is already underway.

your points are precise. Land acquisition is a nightmare in Bd.It is one of the main reason behind thee delay of four lane project.Elevetaed all the way means they don't have to go through that again. Also the area is densely populated and mostly agrarian.

Its an all elevated road. They're much more expensive than 'at grade' roads.
Its roughly the same amount it costs in India as well to build something that long.

my meant was, why there is need for making all road elevated. 9B Usd is huge money.

it will give Bangladesh economy a huge boost in efficiency and create a lot of jobs opportunities in the process. Creating expressway is always a recipe to economic growth.
