Dhaka 2nd least liveable city in the world

Dhaka didn't become a craphole overnight, it's been one for over 3 decades. So don't be so shocked every year.

People habitually throw rubbish on the street, poor oil and food into drains, they park where they want and ignore all traffic rules. 7m people won't change overnight.

But truthfully, that is just a symptom, there are just too many people and almost no one pays the correct tax. So how can you employ adequate street cleaners, rubbish disposal? A country of 160m, where so many move to the city with no job, home or prospects - of course the place is a dump.

In reality, the answer to BD problems is more money. Financial growth is the only solution - we have to maintain development despite all the people and issues trying to distract us.

Bangladesh capital Dhaka has been ranked the second least liveable city in the world while Damascus ranked the worst, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit annual global survey.

Civil war and terrorism resulted in cities like Damascus ranking poorly and unavailability of adequate infrastructure is responsible for the low score in Dhaka.

Every city was assigned a rating of relative comfort for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Each factor in a city is rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable.

Dhaka scored an overall of 38 out of a possible score of 100.

Meanwhile, in stability, Dhaka scored 50, healthcare 29.2, culture and environment 40.5, education 41.7 and in infrastructure 26.8.

The liveability ranking considers that any city with a rating of 80 or more will have few, if any, challenges to living standards. Any city with a score of less than 50 will see most aspects of living severely restricted.

Meanwhile, Vienna of Austria ranked on the top of most liveable cities with an overall score of 99.1.

There are some other reasons too and that will make almost impossible to change our country ( not only Dhaka)

In Bangladesh peoples who have unlimited gas supply ,they dry their cloths with the gas stove, even some peoples just don't switch off the stove only to save a match stick . On the other hand others use costly lpg cylinders and you need monthly 3/4 of them if you regularly boil water for take a bath during winter.
Almost all peoples waste water because of fixed bills . There are hundreds of examples are everywhere.
Although my points are not about pollution, still it's related to be a good nation.
If we waste natural gas and water only because it has fixed bill ,then we have very selfish and self centred mentally and that's extremely bad.

How the govt can stop people from moving to their places of choice. Especially the nearby places to Dhaka provide jobs and livelihood.

Not being a communist country, the BD govt is not to develop new cities from nothing. But, when jobs are available in some places new townships are built by the private enterprises there. The govt function will be to build roads, drainage system, garbage cleaning, etc., that will also cause more employment and speedier circulation of money.

When shoppers are available the private people also set up new retail shops and wholesale businesses. Goods and human transportation systems will also gradually develop. So, investment must be made in the manufacturing or other production plants where will the people get jobs and earn money. Other things will come one after another.

Looking at the photographs, pedestrians are certainly at fault. But, the Dhaka traffic system is also obsolete to the highest degree. Roads are more car friendly than are pedestrian-friendly. In any modern city a 2, 4, or 6-lane wide road is connected with many side roads that cross almost 90 degrees to the main road.

These side roads assist traffic flow by diverting many vehicles to these. Not only this, these intersections are fitted with traffic lights as well as ZEBRA crossings over which the pedestrians cross the main and side roads. Dhaka roads lack these facilities.

I have used also a few overbridges. They are too high and are probably without (not sure) landings. The steps are too narrow and too close. It is difficult to use. I have seen also a few broken steps. Now, about the number of overbridges over any road. The spacings maybe 1 km or more. We should not expect people to walk 1 km to cross the road.

Without the minimum facilities for the pedestrians, naturally, they keep on crossing the roads wherever they find an opportunity at the risk of being hit and killed. My suggestions are:

1) Build more low-height overbridges @ no more than 500 m.
2) Since constructing side roads is time-consuming I will propose to set up many ZEBRA crossings at certain intervals even if there are no side roads. Vehicles will stop at a red signal and people will cross the road at these points.

Dhaka is the world’s second least liveable city, behind only the war-torn Syrian capital of Damascus, the latest rankings from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) have concluded.

The EIU surveyed 140 cities around the world for its Global Liveability Index 2018, scoring them on over 30 parameters under five categories: healthcare, infrastructure, culture and environment, stability, and education.

Dhaka earned its position by scoring an overall rating of 38 out of 100, where 100 represents ideal living conditions.

At the top of the list, Vienna in Austria (99.1) dislodged Melbourne in Australia (98.4) for the first time in seven years.

At the bottom, Dhaka slipped two places from last year, when the city was ranked 137th with an overall rating of 38.7.

The capital’s best performance for 2018 is in stability, where it is rated 50, while the worst score is the 26.8 given to its infrastructure.

Although Dhaka has consistently performed poorly in the EIU surveys over the past five years - finding a place among the top five cities with the worst living conditions - the ratings have generated mixed reactions among urban development experts in Bangladesh.

“The EIU did not take into account Dhaka’s population density and culture,” Iqbal Habib, member secretary of the Urbanization and Governance Program of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), told the Dhaka Tribune.

The EIU is the research and analysis division of The Economist Group, the sister company to The Economist newspaper based in the UK.

“Dhaka is very resilient, having bounced back from large-scale crises many times; take the terror attack in 2016, for example,” Iqbal said.

“Dhaka has a strong cultural and religious identity. Considering all these factors, it is not appropriate to compare Dhaka with cities like Vienna.”

Ratings ‘injustice’

On the perceived lack of access to healthcare facilities, Iqbal said around 41,000 people live in each square kilometre of Dhaka on average.

“People living in slums can access healthcare services in government facilities,” he said. “If they [the EIU] compare us with a country whose overall population is roughly equal to Dhaka’s West Dhanmondi area, than it is an injustice.”

However, Iqbal acknowledged that Dhaka had many shortcomings, and said there is a gap between possibility and opportunity.

“We have fallen behind in population management, constructing environment-friendly infrastructure, and water urbanism,” he said.

Dr Akter Mahmud, professor of urban and regional planning at Jahangirnagar University, said the survey had correctly identified the problems faced by the residents of Dhaka - particularly when it comes to infrastructure and road transportation.

“The city has expanded because of its growing population, but there is no inclusiveness or proper planning in the infrastructure,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.

“We don’t have an adequate number of roads (and) the capital has little to offer to its residents in terms of recreation. Movement is difficult for women and girls.

“There is a lack of quality healthcare services in the city (and) only 7% of the housing facilities are public.”

What does it mean to the common people?

Many residents of Dhaka do find the city unliveable.

“We may not be impacted by war, but the situation is hardly better,” Mizanur Rahman, a government official, told the Dhaka Tribune.

“We are ranked among the top five cities with the worst air pollution. The city becomes a hot chamber during summer. It is so congested - I can reach into my neighbour’s house through my windows easily. It is suffocating.

“A decade ago, we could go to parks and walk on the roads. Now, because of the dense population and the security issues, all the parks are closed in the evening. Where can I go for a walk? Not everyone lives beside Gulshan or Banani Lakes or the Hatirjheel area,” he added.

However, there are many others to whom the latest EIU ranking means little.

“I don’t care if the city is liveable or not; I found income opportunities here,” Jamir Ali, a rickshaw puller, said.

“Even if the city’s living conditions improve, it doesn’t mean it’s going to change my condition. I will still be living in a dirty slum, drinking unsafe water, and in constant fear of dying in a road accident.”

Dhaka will start going up the rankings very soon as the effects of RSTP 2016-2035 kick in. This will dramatically improve both the environment and the infrastructure scores.

You seem to be a very big mouthpiece of your BAL govt. What the hell this govt has done so far during its almost ten-year tenure? It is nothing except a few future fantasy projects Hasina love to dream in the early morning. Now, instead of Hasina, you are coming with many dreams. You must be sick. Dhaka is full of this kind of roads.

Instead of dreaming fantasy RSTP projects, which BD is incapable to undertake because it is a poor country, please fix the roads so that the foreigners cannot spit on us. What a Golden Bengal this BAL govt has built!!
