What's new

Devyani Khobragade gets full diplomatic immunity, flies back home

political drama to gain female and minority votes. she was ought to come. all drama staged by congress lobby. This is international politics.

In India too, there was lot of criticism on how India handled the issue. There were questions whether the case was worth the US-India relations.

The Indian government knew exactly what it was doing.

This was never about Khobragade or even her alleged treatment.

This was a move by the Indian government to make the American establishment consciously take note of and acknowledge the importance of the Indian relationship.

And why you do think so? Any pattern you observed?

The whole episode would not have been taken that seriously by India if US marshals were little bit more civil

They should have not arrested her in public.

Is she going back to the US since her husband works there?

As long as she has immunity, which will now essentially be indefinite, she can.

There's no doubt, she's corrupt.

This was a case of an attorney (Preet Bhara) being overzealous in his effort to move up the professional ladder. He may have sealed the nails on his career's coffin with this ill conceived stunt.

I don't think Preet Bharara's career will be damaged by this affair. His ego might be, but that's a different matter.

He did nothing wrong (despite Indian claims of mistreatment) and the blame for Khobragade walking free will fall on the State department, not him.

And why you do think so? Any pattern you observed?

Yup.
First Italy, now the US.
Indian government is demanding recognition of the 'changing world order' from the West.

P.S. If the Italian and the American capitulation had happened under Modi, most of the Indians on this forum would be chanting his name.

No. She won't be allowed to enter US. That is why she is being asked to leave in the first place.

On Thursday, the Indian mission to the United Nations rejected the State Department's request that her immunity be waived. Then in a diplomatic note, the U.S. mission requested Khobragade's immediate departure from the United States and said it would take steps to prevent her from obtaining a visa in the future. It also said Khobragade, 39, who is married to an American, risked arrest if she tried to return.

"Upon her departure a warrant may be issued for her arrest and should she seek to enter the United States she could be arrested," the note said.

Nice

Now what about Mrs. Richards ??? She is not in US with legal passport. In fact she is absconding with a diplomatic passport. Is Barara going to give her one US passport

I will be more eager to see Sangita returens than Devyani.

Now india should Troll US by putting her under trial...
What troll ??? She is going to face charges in Adharsh. Thats not even a Surprise to her also.

What India wanted was all charges dropped and an unconditional formal apology. It got neither and we were unsuccessful in even getting an extension from the courts. I'll leave it to you to figure out who miscalculated their clout and lost and what Americans really think of the "Indian relationship."

She should face charges...
I am only mentioning that US clowns would not understand why indian govt with peoples supports did all this ...
To put her under trail?

Bazaar haggling 101: you always ask for more than what you know the other guy will pay.

This leaves you room to "compromise" in "good faith".

P.S. I had also predicted (don't have the post handy) that, in return for diplomatic immunity, India would quietly drop the demand for apology.
