Desai questions 'suitability' of Gita in modern India

Professor Emeritus of London School of Economics Lord Meghnad Desai on Wednesday said the Bhagavad Gita was not "a suitable text for modern India".
"Why are we respecting the text uncritically, which has so many flaws?" he asked while delivering a lecture on "The Bhagavad Gita: A secular inquiry into A sacred text" at AN Sinha Institute of Social Studies.
He said: "The Bhagavad Gita has many flaws and certain questions should be raised by us. My purpose is to analyse and deconstruct the text. I am trying to read the Bhagavad Gita as a secular text and not as a sacred text. I am putting certain questions to the authorship though multiple authors are there."
Desai added that there are certain elements in the text of the Bhagavad Gita which are not suitable in modern India.
The Professor Emeritus said: "In the text, it has been asked to do karma without thinking about the consequences. How can it be said that we should not think about the consequences? Whatever we do affects others too. For example, if I start drinking and then driving without thinking about the consequences, I might kill many people on the road."
He added: "If I do that, I might have to go for psychological examination. It is not possible that we go on thinking just about doing karma without thinking about others. How can we think only about ourselves and not others and go on killing people."
Desai said the people should think about the consequences so that we do not harm others by our actions.
At the lecture organised by Nalanda University, he also talked about women and observed that women had not been mentioned in the text anywhere.
He said: "Women have not been mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita anywhere. It is just two shlokas where they have been mentioned. One among the two is that mentioned in 9.32 (chapter 9, verse 32) that is mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah striyo vaisyas tatha sudras te 'pi yanti param gatim. The translation for this is ' son of Pritha, those who take shelter in Me, though they be of lower birth, women, vaishyas [merchants] and shudras [workers] can attain the supreme destination.' This is again to be thought about."
Meghnad Jagdishchandra Desai is an Indian-born British economist and Labour politician.
Hetukar Jha, the head of the department of sociology, Patna University, chaired the event. The officer on special duty (academic affairs and university development), Nalanda University, was also present on the occasion. Asian Development Research Institute founder member Shaibal Gupta and Gopa Sabharwal, the vice-chancellor of Nalanda University, were also present at the event.

My understanding is that one is asked to do his duties without expecting (thinking about) rewards. Not sure how drinking irresponsibly fits there. Sounds downright stupid, the example.

OMG :lol:..How much more de-racinated can people become as to question one of the most celebrated philosophical works of all time, that in as much words, gives the very identity of the Indian civilization ?

Now wtf is supposed to be a 'secular' text as opposed to be a 'sacred' text ? Doesn't it reach Lord Megnad Desai that the Bhagwad Gita is precisely a sacred text and is meant to be taken like that ?

No your Lordship. You just happen to have a very materialistic/shallow power of grasp and not everyone is impeded as you. The lines you mentioned is not to be taken in that way. It means do your duties as required by your Dharma (in Arjuna's case Kshatriya Dharma which was to fight for truth) without thinking about the fruits in your afterlife or thinking about heaven or hell. Your "Dharma" does no require you to drink and drive. So you are clearly mistaken in your assumption/interpretation. One modern day example I can think of politicians who introduce populist schemes with an eye on votes knowing fully well it increases the fiscal deficit. So going by Gita, what they ought to do is, indulge in true reforms without thinking about the fruits of their work (the votes in the next elections)

BTW the most basic question - why should a sacred text (he admitted in as much) be reviewed under a 'secular' lens ? I'm sorry. I'm no even getting what it is suppose to mean ? :undecided:

Well I say its pretty suitable for modern times if he can review it under a secular lense and despite a very stupid analyses does not get beheaded.

BTW Gita can indeed be questioned and criticized on certain grounds same as all religious texts. We must accept with time a lot has changed and accepting this will make us better hindus.

From when Drinking became karma? It have mentioned karma should be done without feeling about consequences...
First and foremost his example is as stupid as him...
I welcome constructive criticism, but not so stupid as this

always good to question and adapt teachings to modern times. one must do this exercise to rejuvenate.

Gita speaks of all 'living beings' not just man or woman, this Desai is one plonker for sure.

“One who does not hate anyone; is friendly and compassionate to all living beings; shares his belongings with others; has no sense of ownership; free from ego; even-minded in both happiness and distress; forgiving; tolerant in all situations; always satisfied; worships me with determination and devotion. Such a person is very dear to me.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 12.13-14)

Sanskrit words must be interpreted while being aware of the context..
Karma here means duties...Drinking and driving is not one's duty..one's duty is to learn,take care of one's parent etc.

This is what happens when we try to learn Old texts without a proper Guru...
