Most Ulema based their reason on the following verse of Quran:

"O Prophet! Command your wives and your daughters and the women of the Muslims to cover their faces with a part of their cloaks; this is closer to their being recognized and not being harassed; and Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful." Ahzaab 33:59.

Now the argument the Ulema make is that a Muslims woman is asked not to reveal herself as instructed in Quran and because it may not be possible in certain working environments, the money earned by doing something in which the woman had to reveal herself would be against the Sharia.

However, in soorah Noor Allah says:

"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like palms of hands or one eye or both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands fathers, their sons, their husbands sons, their brothers or their brothers sons, or their sisters sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful." Al-Noor 24:31.

From the above verse, it appears that there are some relaxations and a woman is still allowed to keep her face and hands open whenever necessary. Obviously this necessity will arise when she is outside of her home from which we can understand that she may still leave her house and do things.

Bottom line is, a woman can leave her house and do things so long she maintains her modesty as (or as close as) instructed in Quran. Islam is the religion of nature and things that are un-natural are also un-Islamic. In todays modern times where one needs serious resources to send his/her kids to good Schools and maintain a minimum level of living standard, it is becoming increasingly difficult to rely on a single salary. If there is a legitimate need for a woman to leave her house and earn, Islam has not barred her to do so.

OK fine, I have had similar experiences with Tablighi Jamaat but how this proves that RAW is involved in all this? Besides, these folks who go from mosque to mosque and city to city are not the Scholars but only volunteers who possess only rudimentary knowledge of Islam. If you do not find their argument(s) in aligned with Quran (Iqra bismi rabbikalla dhi khalaq), just dismiss them and move on.

So what one should do? Learn Arabic instead of relying on one or another translator. Than there are several Tafaseer that explain the meanings in the correct context. Of course all this needs some effort, the effort that we do not want to make and find it more convenient to drop the ball all together and blame the translators/Ulema/Mufasserreen for our laziness.

Its like a person who wants to know Science, but refuses to learn English (whereas most scientific literature is in English) and when he gets failed, he puts all the blame on the writers of the Science books instead.

As the history of Islam goes, the dar ul uloom and its teachings are a recent innovation. Shabbir Usmani, ah yes, the founder of JUI. I leave it to readers here to decide whether this has been a positive contribution for our country or otherwise.

The fact is that the fatwas of this institution have empowered right-wing hardliners. That is a fact. So while we should improve ourselves, we should also destroy sources of ideological support for the worst tendencies amongst us. This institution certainly qualifies as such as source.

As I said before, you do not have to follow any example so far you yourself have sufficient knowledge about the subject. The biggest problem with us, the Muslims is, that we have surrendered our rights of understanding of religious matters to few select only because we do not want to make any effort. In Islam there was never a clergical hierarchy as it was/is among the Christians and Jews as well as Pagons yet with our laziness and lack of interest we finally erected one such class, the Mullah. This damn Darul uloom deoband does the devils work and is a scourge for humanity. It has spread nothing but misery all over. We owe terror in the subcontinent to the ideology of these idiotic scoundrels. They should be sent to the other world quickly so that God can shift them to the accommodation most suited for them... No matter how regressive the fatwas come out of Deoband, not once have they justified terrorism in the name of Islam or suicide bombings. Let me also remind you that Deoband has not issued any fatwa of Kufr against any sect including shias.

This is from the Darul-uloom Deoband and not the Pakistani so called Deobandi ulemas who use whatever means they can to empower themselves politically.

The terror in the subcontinent is thanks to using Islam and various sects as proxies and to gain political capital. This could be any sect or religion and the end result would be the same.

Take the case of Kashmir "jihad"
While Pakistani establishment used this issue and gathered JI activists and other sects including barelvis on the plank of Jihad against India. It was Dar-ul-uloom deoband that clarified that so long as there is freedom of religion there is no Jihad applicable. Moreover, for a Jihad has to be declared overtly and can't be fought covertly as was being done. The idea of establishing an Islamic state and if it doesn't happen peacefully then to use armed struggle for it is not a Deobandi view. Infact, they have historically opposed it during the Independence movement by opposing the creation of Pakistan which was advocated on the same plank.


Again, I ofcourse agree that Deoband and other schools of thought needs to reform their ideas in the light of Quran and Sunnah and ignore cultural baggage about women's role e.t.c. If a woman is wearing the hijab then there is no reason why she can't go outside and work and help in the family affairs. The Prophets wife herself was a businesswoman. But moreover, those who don't want to follow the fatwa don't have to. Its a religious opinion and not binding on you if you don't want to follow this.

But that doesn't mean that they advocate terrorism e.t.c.. That is completely incorrect and wrong. In Pakistan, there are groups that are indulging in militant attacks but that is because of the militarization of society and state sponsorship of these groups so u have Shias, Barelvis, Ahle-Hadees and deobandi groups but those are just affiliations. Most of them are just bandits with guns killing fellow Muslims. Blaming Dar-ul-uloom Deoband for acts committed by these groups in Pakistan and Afghanistan is illogical especially since they don't take any orders from this place on what to do and what not to do.
