It's laudable that India sets lofty goals. In the spirit of Manmohan Singh's declaration that Mumbai will be better than Shanghai by 2009, Arvind Kejriwal has declared Delhi will be like London in a year...

What do our Indian members think about this goal? How realistic is it?

I have posted some photos of London for comparison...

Delhi will be London in a year, says Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal promised in an emotive politically-charged speech to give city’s civic management a makeover and make it like London’s within one year if Aam Aadmi Party wins the upcoming municipal polls that are likely to be held in April.

Kejriwal said that his fight against the Centre has been a struggle to make way for the common people. He also attacked BJP in the municipal corporation and Congress, which was in power for fifteen years under Sheila Dikshit.

He said municipal bodies have failed to keep the city clean while addressing a public rally in Uttam Nagar.

“They say Kejriwal fights a lot. Yes I do, but not for my wife or children. I fight for your rights. So you tell me, should I fight or not?” said Kejriwal.

He cited his fight to get the increase in minimum wages for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled labour approved by the LG after it was rejected last year.

The CM said that his government was helpless regarding sanitation as this is the primary responsibility of the corporations. "The last time, the people of Delhi gave us a historic 67 out of 70 seats in assembly polls. Now, in the civic polls, give AAP all 272 wards to weed out corruption in the corporations. If AAP gets control, I promise to clean up Delhi like never before," Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal highlighted education and health as the key sectors where Delhi government has managed to steer change in the form of improved infrastructure and quality. He attributed the positive outcome to the crackdown on corruption.

"Before AAP came to power, the government didn't carry out sewer works in unauthorised colonies. But we changed that as human beings live even in these colonies. Apart from laying sewers, we are working on regularisation. We sent the file to the Centre a year ago, but decision on it has been delayed. The high court has ordered the Centre to speed up the matter," Kejriwal said.

Comparing the power rates in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh with Delhi, he said they were the lowest in the capital. "We haven't allowed power tariffs to go up since we came to power. Why are BJP and Congress not able to do it in the states ruled by them? We have gone to Supreme Court for the audit of discoms and are hopeful for a positive outcome. If the accountability of discoms is fixed and the losses accounted for, then power rates will reduce further," the CM said.

Everyone who knows about Arvind Kejriwal knows that there is not a single liar as great as him in India. The man has an uncanny ability to exaggerate, lie and twist matters to suit his convenience such that he remains in media. Becoming another London is indeed ambitious but if this useless CM continues to rule that state, I see Delhi falling decades behind other emerging cities of the country.

Most properties in Delhi aren't legit. They were cross-traded by those who came from Pakistan as refugees over the years. This resulted in many people getting disproportionately rich on properties given for free by the government.
Also, most of Delhi is unplanned since the beginning; especially the area west of Rajpath and Rashtrapati Bhawan.

If you see residential colonies beyond Karol Bagh both westwards and northwards, most of them are unstructured and have been made on government land which was given post-construction approvals. I am surprised why Chandigarh wasn't declared India's capital, if planning is supposed to be a criteria.

The Pakistani capital of Islamabad is far, far more well planned and structured than Delhi. Well laid out roads, symmetric colonies, open parks for the public, good civil amenities etc.

Cities such as Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Hyderabad and even the new ones such as Lavassa city near Pune beat Delhi any day by miles.

:cheesy:

Why didn't Manmohan Singh think of this? He could have turned Mumbai into Shanghai overnight!

MMS didn't even have the power to go to the toilet without asking his Italian owner, let alone change cities' names.

I've lived in Delhi for about an year...I had the horrific experience with city...city isn't livable...lot of illegal settlements...slums like munirka area!! What AK did is instead tackling the problem...he legalised these colonies...if god forbid if an earthquake was to happen...hundreds of thousands will be killed!

Whatever one may say about @tw00tw00 and his obsession with outrageous statements made by Indian politicians.

He has significant knowledge of Indian affairs. I suspect he is an Indian observer in some Chinese University or think tank coming here for occasional ego massage and fun.

What do you think?

Agreed.

I have stayed in Delhi for over 18 years and I can imagine. After returning back to Sikkim, I realised how horrible the return on investment is over there. As a kid, the city was good when my father was posted there. Over the period of years, it has turned into a mess.

And people are also directly responsible for it. After my 'normalisation' period in Gangtok, I realised that there is no need to be aggressive at all, compared to the up-in-arms attitude Delhi people have. Though I moved when Sheila Dixit was the CM, the city continues to slide down the liveability index. After AK's arrival, it just got worse than ever.

Ideally Delhi should be declared a UT and managed only by the Lt. Governor rather than this caricature of a CM. All Kejriwal does is write movie reviews on twitter, do long, boring ads and blame everything on PM Modi.

can't blame him , our people are that stupid , he won with a thumping majority in the national capital , the people in one of the most urbanized regions of our country are that stupid that they are not able to see through the freebies that he was offering and wonder if they are viable. They are not able to see through the drama or stunt he pulled of from his india against corruption movement where he claimed never to enter politics with anna hazare as its face to going on to contest delhi elections & do every thing possible to win in punjab. Brits din't simply rule india for 200 years , humari bewkofi dekh kar kisi ko bhi confidence ajaye.

Not all Chinese are as alien to India as we think they are.

On a recent trip to Himachal, I met up with a Chinese tourist and his wife (both Hong Kongers). They were very well aware of India and had done their research well, including politics and even spoke enough Hindi to manage their way throughout the upper three-quarters of the country.

This reminds me of a very important issue.

I think it warrants another thread.

I will start one and tag you there.
