Delhi wants Dhaka ties to reach 'highest possible peak'

DHAKA: India has said it would like its ties with Bangladesh to attain the "highest possible peak" with bilateral cooperation being consolidated in all sectors.

Visiting Vice President Hamid Ansari expressed this hope while meeting President Zillur Rahman.

"Our relations with Bangladesh will be more and more strengthened in coming days as we share many common things including culture and history," Ansari said Thursday.

Ansari arrived here Thursday on a two-day visit to join the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Nobel Laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore .

The joint launch of the celebrations with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled later Friday.

At present, Rahman said, "excellent bilateral relations" were prevailing between the two countries and Bangladesh attached "great importance" to its ties with India, Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha (BSS) the official news agency reported.

This is the first high-level visit to Bangladesh by an Indian delegation after the Awami League-led government took office in January 2009.

The visit is perceived as a preparation to the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's trip later this year.

Rahman thanked Ansari for coming to Bangladesh to join the celebrations of Tagore's birth anniversary.

He expressed hope that the joint celebrations would further deepen the friendship between the people of the two countries.

The president called India a trusted friend of Bangladesh and recalled the crucial support of the Indian government and its people during the country's war of independence in 1971.

Ansari said India had supported Bangladesh during its war of independence in 1971 "as a moral responsibility", The Daily Star said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also met Ansari, a former diplomat who has dealt with Bangladesh while in the Indian Foreign Service.

The two leaders discussed a wide range of bilateral issues, expansion of trade and business as well as further flourishing of cultural heritage between the two neighbouring countries, PM's press secretary Abul Kalam told newspersons.

Renowned Bangladeshi Artistes to Perform in Delhi

Admirers of Rabindranath Tagore's works will be treated to innovative performances of dance, dance-drama, theatre, songs and recitations by a group of accomplished Bangladeshi artistes during a weeklong India-Bangladesh joint celebration of the poet's 150th birth anniversary, beginning this weekend.

Bangladesh is sending a 31-member cultural team to the celebration in India which has been divided into three separate categories -- 'Katha Kabya Abhinay', 'Sangeet Abriti' and 'Nritya Natya' -- to be held at Meghdoot Theatre and Kamni Auditorium in Mandi House, in the heart of Delhi.

Danseuse Tamanna Rahman will put up a performance on May 8 under 'Katha Kabya Abhinay' category, while a 19-member team led by choreographer and director Belayet Hossain Khan will stage “Samanya Khati” on May 9 under 'Nritya Natya' section.

As part of the 'Sangeet Abriti' section, the audience will get to enjoy the renditions of Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya, Refaqat Hussain Chowdhury, Shama Rahman, Lily Islam, Aditi Mohsin and Bhaswar Bandopadhyay.

Sangeet Bhavan of Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan will stage “Bhanusingher Padavali”.

Actress Seema Biswas will stage “Strir Patra” while another actress Swatilekha Sengupta will put up “Amar Priyo Rabindranath”, excerpts from selected poems and the novel “Ghare Baire”. Sengupta acted in the role of Bimala opposite Victor Banerjee (as Nikhilesh) and Soumitra Chatterjee (Sandip) in the Satyajit Ray-directed film of the same name.

Four leading poets of Bangladesh -- Rafiq Azad, Nirmalendu Guun, Mahdeb Saha and Habibullah Siraji -- will also attend the celebration and so will Tagore exponent and educationist Professor Zillur Rahman Siddiqui.

Hmm isn't it natural for a country to peruse deals with another to such an extent so as to make sure it wont have to think twice ,when faced with a tricky situation? After all BD is surrounded by India. Don't u think Bd will benefit form this as all of it land routs need to be through India in the future?

Think about it such a big market India is ...if in the future ur trade flourishes to an even greater extent so as to cope with our consumer demands think of the opportunists with low cost transportation and sharing in energy sector.

Has India even ill treated Bhutan or any of its close Allies? All Interactions have basis in self Interest and India cant have any Interest in seeing BD weak and subdued. Better the BD economy better it is for us.

I dont think you can get long term peace by subduing a country. However, there is a definite pecking order among countries, pretending everybody to be equal does not make it so.
As neighbors we will all ways influence each other, you cant get away from that too.
