The Hindu : News / International : Delhi may ignore Jayalalithaa demand on training Lankan forces

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s demand to scrap training courses for Sri Lankan Air Force personnel is unlikely to find takers in New Delhi because Sri Lanka and India, just last week, have decided to enhance cooperation in security issues.

Asked for a reaction, a senior official said that Sri Lanka could not react to the demands of a Chief Minister of an Indian State. All bilateral issues were discussed and decided by Colombo and New Delhi, and hence, there was no need to respond, the official said.

When there is an outside factor that affects training, as had happened earlier, the defence institutions moved the trainees to another facility in a ‘neutral’ State.

Despite relations between the two countries not being at its best in recent times following the Indian vote for a resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council in March, defence and security cooperation between the two countries are firmly looking up.

Indian National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, after a meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, among others, told the Indian media stationed in Colombo last Friday, that security related issues were indeed discussed. “We also discussed maritime cooperation and other security related issues. It was agreed that we could take this further. Sri Lanka is our close neighbour, with whom we enjoy a multifaceted and dynamic relationship. We look forward to strengthening and further developing this engagement,” he said.

After the Defence Secretary-level talks in December 2010, India had made available additional slots in Indian Armed Forces training institutions, apart from agreeing to hold bilateral exercises. The Indo-Sri Lanka Naval exercises were subsequently held off Trincomalee. India is also in the process of building two Off Shore Patrol vessels for Sri Lanka.

India’s peacetime defence engagement with Sri Lanka was shaped in a series of talks after the fall of the Tamil Tigers in May 2009. The talks, which began at staff-level in the Army, Navy and Air Force then, has also seen the service Chiefs of all three Indian Armed Forces visit Sri Lanka to firm up this relationship. The Defence Secretary level talks are structured, institutionalised and periodic. It caters to the defence concerns of both countries, apart from taking into consideration the larger question of security issues in the region.

Delhi Should Neither Ignore nor Cede to the demands . There's Always a Middle Way . How about Shifting training to Andra Pradesh or Kerala ??

.
that's all diplomacy.let srilanka enjoy between india and china due to their geographical location.

Amma who can't run auto's in TN on meters, wants to dictate what should be the relations between Srilanka and India. We need to condemn the Sri Lanka for what they are doing for decades, but Amma making such a statement just show political brink man ship than any sympathy to Lankan Tamils

Frankly I don't understand why Sri Lankan security forces continue to train in India given this continuing hostility. Perhaps it is the cost factor? Meaning either it is free or subsidized? Which would be understandable to some extent. But there are far better defence training establishments elsewhere in the world, including in China and Russia. It would be better to send them to train there than to have any training affected by at the whims and fancies of Indian politicians like Jayalalitha et al as this is not the first time this has happened. It is unfortunate, but Sri Lanka clearly cannot depend on India either politically, militarily or economically. This was shown during the war and continues even after the war. The Sri Lankan government, however, seems to think differently....

These Tamil Nadu politicians are a real headache.

Well done Delhi, its important to have good relationship with SL.

. .
We need to find a middle path .Tamil Nadu politicians need to understand that what Sri lanka does internally should not become a reason for enmity between India and Sri Lanka , two countries whose relations go back to the most ancient of ancient history .

We need to make sure India is not held hostage by TN politicians while at the same time ensure that Tamils get their rights in Sri Lanka through diplomacy and dialogue .

.
If its a sensitive issue for a state , do the right thing by transfering them to any other training facility in the country.

Why the SL AF men were send to TN in the first place???, :what:

Addressing the sensitivities of population is a foremost criteria for a democratic republic .

Victory of Tamilnadu, Cheers! Time to have celebrations...
As a race it may be victory for some Tamils in Tamilnadu, but as a country majority of Indians/India lost it! ;)

Lost What ? :what:
