no point buying the bvs10. even ieds can take it out.....can buy them for ressuply roles if they arent too expensive. It would be incredibly dumb of them to buy the cv-90 light tank, coz the abhay is comparable, and better by a good extent.

.
The Abhay is a work in progress. It has not been tested by the army, inducted, and definitely not battle tested.

The Arjun, INSAS, Pinaka, etc. all fell years behind schedule before being fielded.

The light tank requirement is immediate. If the army has to wait 10 years for the Abhay or import today, its better to import. India does not have the luxury of time. The enemy is at the gates.

.
most of the subsystems have been built.....most technologies have already been mastered on the arjun...ie. the hyropneumatic suspension, the turret, bms, gun stabilization etc. Unless the project funding has been stopped, or it has been put on the back burner, We'll probably see it being ready in about 2 years. THere's not much new tech to be mastered here

Abhay was a tech demonstrator and afaik IA has rejected it, just like the light tank varients with a light 105mm gun, while the CV 90 120 light tank has a 120mm gun and offers similar fire power like our MBTs, so you are highly mistaken if you think they are comparable. It's unrealistic to believe that DRDO can provide anything as advanced as the latest IFV of western countries:

We really need to stop these blind love for anything that is called indigenous and should get a realistic view of what we can do and what not. In the naval and aero field we are at a good level, at the armored vehicle side clearly not!

in you opinion
as per our threat perception levels, do you think an abhay will suffer by comparison wrt what we can expect to face? also wont is be way cheaper? in case of ifvs, dont numbers matter to a great degree when you are trying to implement a combined arms doctrine? Will india be willing to buy cv=90s in requisite numbers considering that our planners essentially see tanks as the end all and be all of armoured conflict ?tell me what you think

When you look at the last Israeli / Libanese conflict, Iraq or Afghanistan wars, you will see that low cost IFV were often too less armored, even against rebel forces with simple RPGs. That's why many of the NATO countries had to modify and strengthen their vehicles afterwards, which of course was costly. The Stryker IFV for example, was one of these and now with credible upgrades, it turns out to be way heavier and even too heavy to be airlifted by an C130, as it was planned initially. The Germans, which tend to do too much advertise their new wheeled (Boxer) and tracked (Puma) IFVs as the most secure vehicles in their class, which comes with the downside of heavy weight (over 30t and up to 43t). Modern weapons are so advanced, that you can't take lightly armored vehicles even in UN peacekeeping missions anymore, let alone to face PLA.

IN send out an RFI for IFV, morta carriers, tank destroyers and light tanks all meant for the northern borders, in areas where our bigger tanks like Arjun and T90 won't be helpful anymore. PLA has huge numbers of older Russian based armored vehicles, but already is modernising with new wheeled and tracked vehicles too. We can't compete them in numbers and when we then also compromise on quality, how should we be able to face them?
I'm not sure what IA has in mind, but it's pretty clear that DRDO is not an answer for us and our requirements.

Abhay or Tank Ex might have been useful low cost modernisation programs for older Russian vehicles in our inventory, but if we want to buy or develop new once, we need more capable once and not just cheap stuff.

If the tender is issued tomorrow for light tanks and the ABHAY isn't ready, too bad for DRDO/OFB. The army cant wait for DRDO or OFB anymore.

The army needs light tanks for the Chinese border right now. Issue a tender, do trials, buy the winner, and TOT the system. Problem solved.

As a side note.... I am wondering why the British light tank has rubber treads....

anyone have a pro vs con analysis of rubber vs conventional tread?

Adaptive camouflage is only in the infra red bandwidth ... While you are right on the indigenous capability.. but it is the maximum that could be extracted from the indian industries and allocated fund.. you cant expect a golden egg from a country chicken .....

Secondly western industries have been soaked in this field for more than a century ... while we are just doing this for a decade.. when we have got at least 1/2 a century experience and defence budget equal to the western standard we can compare the abhay with CV90..

Afaik they used rubber pads earlier and now use complete rubber chains because they are easier to maintain and more cost-effective than metal chains. They are also more useful in urban areas with roads and highways and are make the vehicle less noisy.

True, I just pointed out that calling for indigenous developments is not always the right way and that we can't offer as advanced arms and techs at the moment. Also I don't accept the low funding arguement anymore, because that's too simple! Whenever an indigenous development makes a small step (roll out of N-LCA mock up for example), we start celebrating as if we achieved something big, but when the same development later runs into trouble and delays, it's always government and less spending that caused it.

Secondly western industries have been soaked in this field for more than a century ... while we are just doing this for a decade.. when we have got at least 1/2 a century experience and defence budget equal to the western standard we can compare the abhay with CV90..

Exactly, but that's something that many Indians, especially in the industries seems to forget and a reason why they overestiate their own capabilities. As mentioned earlier, we have good areas and should focus on them, while keep improving other areas with foreign help, otherwise we will not only suffer from delays, but from low capable arms and techs, that will be a problem for the security of our nation!
