Bangladesh Ordnance Factories (BOF) is the largest military industrial complex of Bangladesh Army which produces arms, ammunition, and equipment for the Bangladesh Military.Headquarters Gazipur, Bangladesh.

History

It was inaugurated in 1970. Although it suffered considerable damage during the War of Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, its capabilities have been restored and expanded since then.

Technology

Initially BOF was set up with technologies machines, equipment and support facilities from China, but gradually technology transfers from Austria, Australia, Belgium, Germany & Italy were added. BOF now boasts a mix of conventional and state of the art computerized controlled processes/systems for manufacturing.

Factories

It currently operates the following factories.

Small Arms Factory
Small Arms Ammunition Factory
Grenade Manufacturing Factory
Artillery Ammunition Factory
Tools Manufacturing Plant

Bangladesh has a nascent defence industry and all existing infrastructure is state-owned. The army owns factories that produce small arms and light vehicles, but Bangladesh still imports much of its small arms and all of its communications equipment and heavy weaponry. Similarly, the government transferred the Khulna and Chittagong shipyards to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in the late 1990s, and the Narayanganj dockyard was transferred to the MoD in 2006, thus providing the navy full administrative control over domestic facilities to repair, service and maintain its hulls and propulsion systems. In terms of research and development, one area where research has been successful is in the field of tropical medicine. The Armed Forces Medical College and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, in spite of lack of funding and low government priority, continue to be effective research and teaching organisations. Elsewhere, the MoD has a small research and development unit manned by a few scientists.

What do u suggest to improve it.

The biggest problem that the BD military has is the very low defence budget, which currently is around 1.5% of GDP.

Bearing in mind the potential threats that BD has(India and Myanmar) this is way too low.

Since BD is a very poor country, it cannot afford to increase it's defence expenditure to a more effective level of around 3% of GDP in 1 year. This would need to happen over 10-15 years, with the proportion of GDP being spent on defence increasing by 0.1% every year till it gets to the 3% level.

With the growing economy(6-7% growth per annum) and the extra money that will come in from steadily increasing the proportion of GDP directed towards defence, BD will be in a better postion to negotiate technology transfer agreements with countries as it could then afford to dangle the carrot of multi-billion dollars arm sales to countries.

Today while eating lunch in our hostel canteen, i had a debate with 3 of my friends. 1 vs 3! They are all supporter of reducing our defence budget!

...We should increase our defence budget gradually upto 3/4% of our GDP. We don't have that money to fund heavily in R&D. But we can Arrange for TOT and licensed production of defence materials. We should follow this course from the potential arms deal with russia ...

If BD can give some fund to arm factories,it can be great opportunity for us to fulfill our own needs, beside it can be exporter of small arm deals.

& its true that we cant survive in the long run without producing our own technological arms & other necessary weapons.

When Tax/GDP ratio is just 9-10%, how can you spend 3/4% in defense and then there will be no road, electricity food etc.

Well, BDesh isn't involved in any war; there's no threat to it's sovereignty and chances are it's not going to get involved in a war for coming years...so why not cut the defence budged a bit and focus on economy and other things?

Of course India is a thread to bangladesh. Proof is killing of innocent bangladeshis at the border. May be india is waiting for the day bangladesh retaliate and they think they will bite off part of bangladesh. They have eye over chittagong divitioon.

BOF lacks three words " Research and Development"

The criminals in our country are able to make guns out of pipes and stuff. For a bangladeshi sceintist its a piece of cake. But after that research and development comes in, to make the gun more effective and badass

No, sorry! We cannot just become a snake without the poison tooth. We cannot depend upon others for our security. This will take away our much cherished independence. No other country respects a country of 150 million people who are averse to defend their country.

@ You think that their eyes is only fixed in Chittagong Hill Tract, No!!! No !!! they have an eye over greater Khulna Division. Have you forgotten about "Bongo Bhumi Andolon". The "Bongo Bhumi Waras have separate flag, separate ministry and a separate secreterate at Calcutta. Many a times the volunters of Bongo Bhumi gather at some where in Nadia District where they formally do the parade and take oath.

1. Collection of Historical Facts. In 1947, 1965 war, 1971 and later the non-muslims specially Hindus were evicted from their mother land. Their number was some thing like 50,000.(in 1947) Now it has increased to 1.5 crores. Most of these people are settlled in refugee camps. Besides there are around 2 crores of Hindus inside Bnagladesh. So, 1.5+2=3.5 crores of Hindus. Now, "Kella Fate". They want a separate Bongo Bhumi(Hindu Land) in greater Khuna Division comprising Khulna, Jessore, Magura, Faridpur, Barisal,Satkhira etc.

2. Mission. To establish a separate independant state for all these people under the sponsership of UN. If East Timur and South Sudan can be separated from the main land why not in Bengal ??????

@ They have also a "Teri" eye on Sylhet also. You remember once in 1997 Hongkong was returned to Chiana after 99 years by the British. Some cleaver Indians means old East Pakistani/Bangladeshi has given a formal petition to the Queen of England that separation of Sylhet district from Assam was illegal. The Refurrendom which was held in 1946/47 was completely farce and manipulated so if China can get back return of Hongkong from UK why Sylhet to Assam ???????

@ So, to crush all these conspiries of our great beloved and most trusty historical friend neighbour we need a strong, modern and well informed motivated Army
