The Indian Defence Ministry is taking serious measures to equip the Armed Forces as it proposes acquisition of new generation missiles for the Indian Army and Dornier aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Defence Ministry has proposed a $ 2.4 billion deal for the Indian Army for the procurement of Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missiles (QRSAMs). In addition, a deal for an additional 14 Dornier turboprop STOL utility aircraft for transportation purposes of IAF is expected to be cleared soon by the Defence Ministry.

The Indian Army has been aiming to replace its obsolescent Russian systems with new generation missiles. Hence, it seeks to acquire eight regiments of Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missiles (QRSAMs) to replace the ageing Russian Kvadrat systems. Once given clearance by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), this will Indian Army’s most expensive tender worth $ 2.4 billion.

The QRSAM deal for the army will have partnership and knowledge transfer clauses to ensure that a major part of the equipment is manufactured in India itself. The state-run Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) is to be the designated partner agency for the maintenance transfer of technology and will be involved in the deal for the production of the missiles.

The Indian Army has been desperate to upgrade its air Defence capabilities and it had even floated an RFI for these systems earlier this year. The Indian Army had specified that it was looking for a quick reaction system that can engage targets at a range of 15 km at a minimum altitude of 6,000 meters in less than six seconds. The current move is the second one in five years to obtain the QRSAMs. Global missile manufacturers including French MBDA and Israeli Rafale had responded to the RFI earlier.

As for upgrading the capabilities of the Army Air Defence (AAD), the Defence Ministry has already signed contracts for procuring Akash Missile Systems and steps were being taken for upgrading self-propelled air Defence and Schilka air Defence systems. The acquirement of the QRSAMs is much awaited by the army since the current SAM systems, including the Akash SAM system, are not up to the mark. With several launch failures and absence of advanced interception technology, the air Defence systems of the army need serious upgradation.

Regarding the acquisitions for the IAF, the DAC is expected to give clearance for the acquisition of 14 Dornier aircraft for its transport wing. The Dornier aircraft is to be procured from the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at a cost of $ 200 million and it will be used in light transport roles. HAL is already involved in collaboration with the German aerospace manufacturer Dornier Flugzeugwerke. As for the IAF, it is planning on increasing its Dornier fleet from a current total of 41 units to 55 units.

One question does this mean that Akash SAM is a failed product?

Anyone?????????????????????????

Anyone?????????????????????????

wonder how did you jump to that conclusion??

Akash missile have been ordered in huge nos. by both IAF & IA (nearly 3000 missiles), no way can one called it a failure.

so at least Akash SAM project is one of the few projects which DRDO is proud of.

sorry, my bad, missed that part, i think armed forces just want to keep the new missiles as a back-up or something just in case Akash does not make its mark.

Nod for $1.8 bn defence procurement proposals

New Delhi, June 22 (IANS) India's defence ministry Friday gave its approval to three key proposals from the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Navy to buy 14 new Dornier reconnaissance planes, 116 warship guns and for a nationwide command and control communication network, cumulatively worth $1.8 billion.

The decisions were taken at a marathon two-and-a-half-hour Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting chaired by Defence Minister A.K. Antony, ministry officials said.

Akash is area defense SAMs.. QRSAMs mostly are point defense and quick reaction.. they are supposed to be ultra portable and normally deployed in high value areas like fully operational air bases on forward areas and similar installations
If that were so, why did they point out that Akash did not meet the mark?

This thread is about QRSAMs which are for very short range and Akash is Medium range SAMs. Don't go by media its useless as usual.

We are also having Long Range SAMs it doesn't mean QRSAMs + Medium range Akash are useless.

They are for different uses. We will have Multi layered missile protection. :smokin:

Guess this is the first time indian media made mistake in defence reporting........ akash is NOT NOT NOT QR -SAM . we tried developing MYTRI for that with help of MBDA

Becoz that report is written by a dump reporter...:yahoo:
Nothing new about it. You can hand pick and name out the reliable defence journalists in whole India. Rest of them are just make shift defence journalists. They have to cover IPL and Defence news at the same time. So they use what they suppose :D

Akash isn't QR-SAM. And suppose if it would have failed what the fu@k airforce and army were supposed to do with the amount they are going to receive in next two years ???

If that were so, why did they point out that Akash did not meet the mark?

First as many people said, QRSAMs are for situations where missile has penetrated all other defenses hence are short ranged but extremely agile...

Second, Akash not meeting the mark is because the dumb reporter assumed that Akash had failed hence the order ( since he/she doesnot know the difference between them in first place)

Unprofessional media reporting, nothing more can be said :argh:

QR-SAM's, MR-SAM's and LR-SAM's belong to three different categories. For MR-SAM's and LR-SAM's you need more reaction time to process the given target and to neutralize them as compared to QR-SAM's since distance covered is more, so much more processing of data is required. Hence you will normally find that reaction time of QR-SAM's are least when compared to other two. It is almost impossible to have same reaction time for LR-SAM's and QR-SAM's unless you provide separate supercomputers for each battery which is not feasible at least in present scenario neither is cost effective.
