Lala ji is a term of respect, it means brother. Although muslims use it too (I just met a lalaji yesterday), it is perceived in certain parts of the subcontinent to refer to Hindu Gentlemen.
Some Hindu gentlemen have this as a prefix to their name, like Lala Amarnath, etc.
