Please share your ideas for a new constitution for Bangladesh.

We need a constitution that supports the following:

1. Tolerance for plurality of views and shuns cancel culture and bans.

2. Make it hard for demagogues to rise up and hijack the nation.

3. Eliminates student politics. BD academia and students are one of the least qualified in South Asia. Going by contribution to international journals and recognition of qualifications by the west. Don’t be hurt - look at the facts! Students and teachers must focus on improving their scores!

4. Stops the cycle of revenge and thuggery.

5. Significantly reduces corruption

Here are my ideas:

1. Constitutional right to free speech. Given Bangladesh is a religious country - people would not tolerate blasphemy. But free speech should guarantee right to criticise any public figures including Mujib and Zia. Snowflakery has to be tackled head on!

2. Bangladesh should have a presidential system with term limits. Two five year terms.

3. Parliament with MPs elected based on PR - so no party or group ever gains a controlling majority. Forcing groups to cooperate. Three four year term limits for MPs.

4. President to nominate secretaries for each branch of government with MPs approving the appointment.

5. 3/4 of MPs able to impeach the president.

6. No civil servant (including military) able to stand for any elected office within five years of leaving.

7. Directly elected governors for each district and division. And elected mayors and chairman for cities and municipalities.

8. Judges nominated by president and approved by MPs to serve a fixed term of 8 years.

9. Directly elected anti corruption chief to serve a single term of four years. And cannot stand for elected office for five years.

10. Ban enrolled students from being members of political parties and affiliated organisations. Academia must be free of political influence!
