Air engagements are mostly one on one and the fighter pilot puts his life on the line each time he goes on a mission against the enemy.

No matter what Group Capt Cecil Chaudhry said or did after he retired and what his son says. The fact remains that Cecil Chaudhry was a son of the soil and fought for his motherland in two wars. This should be more than sufficient proof of his patriotism for anyone; it is certainly good enough for me.

In my eyes, anyone who fights for my country, irrespective of his religion, race or ethnicity; is my hero and deserves all the respect. I salute you dear Group Captain Cecil Chaudhry, may Allah bless your soul.

I do not think there was ever a policy of appeasement, however there was also no policy of targeting minorities within the forces.
Group Captains Cecil and Hakimullah were trusted to set up the Combat Commanders School and it remains the most elite training Institute of PAF. He was even commandant of the same.
The late Group Captain was not promoted to air commodore but it was not like he was forced to retire prematurely.
He suffered the fate faced by many fine officers under Zia regime, regardless of religion.

With the advent of Zia, countless new promotions (or lack of) were debatable and this was not because of simple religious bias, though I am sure religion could have been used as an excuse by the Junta to justify their decisions.
The repercussions of Zia's policy of collaborating with hardliners to reinforce his authority did indeed radicalize many Pakistanis and has indeed poked a lot of holes in our national fabric; however in terms of controversial promotions the real reason was the insecurity of an incompetent military dictator and his associates.

The axe fell on many fine officers in all forces who were outspoken and considered not suitable to tow the new agenda.
This included many fine Muslim officers as well who were perceived as inherently opposed to the new direction being undertaken in terms of National Strategy/narrative and its propagation within the Armed Forces.
There were no forced retirements, but many promising careers could have been prolonged, if not for Zia's Junta.

Cecil Chaudhry's retirment was his own doing. Blaming PAF for it is unwise. He had been warned about some aspects of his life which could have compromised national security and he chose to ignore them. It became imperative that he was shown the door. However, given the merit awards he was given , it is laughable that anyone says PAF did not respect him or minorities.
