Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Friday signed a Tk 1,400 crore agreement with Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) to build the Bangabandhu Satellite-1 and its launching ground.

BTRC chairman Shahjahan Mahmood and deputy chief executive of HSBC, Bangladesh, Mahbub-Ur Rahman singed the deal on behalf of their respective sides at BTRC office in the capital.

State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim, French ambassador in Dhaka Sophie Aubert and senior BTRC officials were present on the occasion.

Tarana Halim said Bangabandhu Satellite-1 is expected to be launched on the victory day (16 December) in 2017.

The government had decided to launch the satellite ‘Bangabandhu-1’ with the aim to increase its capacity in communication and broadcast services.

The Bangabandhu-1 will be the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications satellite operated by BTRC. The satellite will cost around US$ 248 million. Bangabandhu-1 will carry a total of 40 Ku and C-band transponders and capacity of 1600 megahertz with the life span of 15 years.

In July 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the parliament that the Bangabandhu Satellite-1 will help Bangladesh save US US$ 14 million annually spent as rent for foreign satellites once it is launched.

She also said the government has a plan to launch the Bangabandhu Satellite-2 and the Bangabandhu Satellite-3 in phases after the successful launching of the Bangabandhu Satellite-1.

So BTRC will develop the satellite?
Nah....not a chance.

BTRC will operate it.

We're a long way from developing satellites atm. The satellite is being manufactured by Thales Alenia.

Edit: too slow...Surya has already answered the question.

Will it be the Russians, French or Chinese that physically launch it in 2017 December end?

What is the total mass of this satellite again?

Just wondering how many 'celebrations' we will have here before the satellite to be built and launched by the European space agency actually goes up.

You have to start somewhere.

After this, BD can start looking at building it's own satellite with foreign help and then eventually
completely indigenous.

If the price is right then I don't see any reason not to launch aboard an Indian rocket either.

Let us wait and see. A child is born after ten months in the mother's womb. So, let it happen gradually but steadily.

40 Ku band transponders,,, and 3500 kg weight? Wow.

GSAT-11 weigh 4500 kg with 40 Ku transponders.

Their satellite have 14C & 26 Ku band transponders. Gsat 11 has 32 Ku & 8 Ka band transponders

Please think about developing some rather simple micro-satellites before building communication sats with JV/on your own.
