Deal reached for Qatari early warning radar

Even though some members argue that this radar is part of the GCC missile protection stratgy, I don't agree with this assumption. Qatar is much closer to Turkey than to Riyadh in terms of foreign policy goals and military cooperation.

Late last month, Turkey’s first foreign military base in the Middle East opened in Qatar to counter what officials called “the same threats.”

They decided to buy this radar just after Ankara and Doha greenlighted the establishment of a Turkish military base in Qatar to protect them from Iranian and Saudi hegemonism. Qataris are very well-known for their hard feelings towards Saudi Arabia. During the 90's the Saudi Kingdom even publicly questioned Qatar's sovereignty. Even some deadly clashes on the Saudi-Qatari border occurred.

However, a 1992 clash between Saudi Arabia and Qatar claimed three lives; Qatar accused Saudi Arabia of attacking a border post at Khafus, while the Saudis stated that the clash took place inside Saudi territory between Bedouins from the two countries. In 1996, Saudi Arabia and Qatar signed a border demarcation agreement, and the two states completed the process in June 1999, signing demarcation maps of their common borders.

The Americans have already a large base in Qatar. I do believe that this radar purchase is connected to Nato and Turkey.
Will agree with you because there was already A/N TPY-2 already present in UAE if they were working together this system was not needed here.

Have I ever said that Israeli system is not good. It is very good and is effective for missiles but will fail in case of MIRV as the derby along with RV makes it difficult for the Israeli system to detect. S 500 can detect and shoot down MIRV but it becomes too expensive.
Arrow 3 missile program and Arrow 2, can shoot down MiRV's and can tell if that's a decoy or not

Raytheon

Raytheon early warning radar system.

US-based defense firm Raytheon has been awarded a $1.1 billion contract to build an early warning radar system for Qatar, the Pentagon has announced.

In a statement, the firm said the system will be integrated into Qatar’s current air and missile defense capabilities once it is completed by mid-2021.

The deal has been in the works for almost four years.

Qatar first put in a request to purchase the radar system in 2013. The contract has since been awaiting lawmaker approval.

Regional stability
At the time, the order package included an A/N FPS-132 Block 5 Early Warning Radar. Additional parts and equipment, training and technical support were also part of the deal.

The system is capable of detecting “sea-launched or intercontinental ballistic missiles” at a range of up to 3,000 miles (4,828 km) and is capable of tracking them in real time, US Defense documents show.

When notifying Congress about the contract, the United States Defense Security Cooperation Agency said that the sale would “promote regional stability by enhancing regional defense to a key U.S. ally.”

It continued:

“The acquisition of this air defense system would provide a permanent defensive capability to the Qatar Peninsula as well as protection of the economic infrastructure and well-being of Qatar.”

Defense
Qatar has spent billions of dollars shoring up its defenses in the past few years amid growing regional instability.

In December, it placed a $29.5 million order with US firm Lockheed Martin for an unspecified number of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC3) missiles and PAC-3 MSE interceptors.

And last fall, the government signed a deal to install a defense system along its coast to help stop hostile ships from entering its waters.

Qatar is also investing in new aircraft as it expands its air defense capability. For example, US lawmakers recently approved Qatar’s purchase of 36 F-15 fighter jets from Boeing.

Thoughts?

American technology (the closest partner of the US by far in the GCC is KSA - the de facto leader of the GCC), NATO opening a new centre in Kuwait (a close ally of KSA) and Qatar being part of the GCC Peninsula Shield Force and working closely together with KSA and the remaining GCC to establish a common GCC missile defence system. Shared geography, threats and almost everything else in common. A few political disagreements that are mainly a legacy of King Abdullah's and the previous Emir reign is incredibly irrelevant given that ties between GCC states are closer than with any other countries or allies of the GCC. Not only that small Qatar, even if it wanted to become a troublemaker, would be unable to do so given its small size. KSA could overrun the country if the US allowed so within 1 day. Not that this would ever happen as people of KSA and Qatar are the same and have brotherly ties.

This integration will only be strengthened for each year for obvious reasons.

One must be incredibly naive to believe that this radar will not actively be a part of the GCC defense capabilities.

Speaking about the US, Raytheon has the closest ties to KSA (by far) of any GCC country. They have informed KSA ages ago about this process which took years and which the GCC was well-informed about.

You are wrong here. it cannot.
An Arrow 3 battery is expected to intercept salvos of more than five ballistic missiles within 30 seconds. Arrow 3 can be launched into an area of space before it is known where the target missile is going. When the target and its course are identified, the Arrow interceptor is redirected using its thrust-vectoring nozzle to close the gap and conduct a "body-to-body" interception.[23]

On December 10, 2015 Arrow 3 scored its first intercept in a complex test designed to validate how the system can detect, identify, track and then discriminate real from decoy targets delivered into space by an improved Silver Sparrow target missile.[15] According to officials, the milestone test paves the way toward low-rate initial production of the Arrow 3.[15]

Heard the same BS about THAAD and Patriot but Yemeni missiles are hitting Saudia so Isreali and US systems are waste of money.

Both systems fail against advanced missiles. the very reason India being more Israeli ally and prefer Russian system.

Dont need to go that far... EVen with Israeli Dome, few rockets pass throu it. no system is perfect.

I know how good these system are better than any one and I know how the new RV make it impossible for these systems to intercept. He is just here to praise the Iron dome but in the actual terms they can not pass near a missile that is more advance than a scud.

Iron Dome did prove itself capable, was able to shoot down 1000 rockets, and excel in field tests done by the U.S.
Altho, no system is perfect

Other uses
In June 2016, it was revealed that the Iron Dome had been tested to successfully intercept salvos of artillery shells, which are typically difficult to destroy because of the need to penetrate the thickness of their metal casings to get to the warhead, and "multiple" air-to-ground precision guided munitions (PGMs) similar to the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM).[69]
Counter-UAV
The Iron Dome has been pitched to the IDF as a more cost-effective anti-aircraft system to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles. Some estimates of the cost of a Tamir interceptor are around $100,000, but it is still 95 percent cheaper than using a MIM-104 Patriot, the primary Israeli interceptor, costing $2-$3 million. Although the Patriot has broader coverage, the low cost of UAVs and operational scenarios they would be encountered in would make Iron Dome equally effective against them. No material upgrades would be needed to optimize the system for drone-killing missions, as this role and capability has been publicized from its inception.[67]

In July 2015, Rafael released video footage of Iron Dome interceptors destroying several low and high-flying UAVs in a test. Although some targets were destroyed by proximity-operated warheads, in others the interceptor achieved a kinetic hit. The company says the system is capable of destroying armed UAVs before they can get close enough to release their munitions, and most medium-altitude reconnaissance UAVs before they are close enough to survey an area.[68]

Altho, I agree, that David Sling is more suitable to defeat advance missiles

In this industry you need to be perfect a single missile that carry a nuke will do the job that billions of dollars spent on these system needed to stop.

The U.S. government has agreed to sell a 5000 km range early warning radar to Qatar. The news was announced by U.S. Defence Secretary Ashton Carter on Dec. 10 during his visit to Bahrein.

"We reached an agreement for Qatar to purchase a 5,000 km [range] early warning radar to enhance its missile defences," Carter said.

It was announced in July 2013 that Qatar had requested a Raytheon AN/FPS-132 Block 5 long-range early warning radar at an estimated cost of USD1.1 billion

The Block 5 system is capable of reporting airborne tracks to a maximum range of up to 2000 km and to a minimum radar cross-section (RCS) of 1 m2
Other sources say maximum range is 3000 miles..4828 km

Deal reached for Qatari early warning radar

The United States Defence Secretary has announced that an agreement has been reached to allow Qatar to purchase a long range early warning radar (EWR) from Raytheon last week.

Secretary Ashton Carter told an audience at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) regional security conference in Manama, Bahrain, that the two sides had reached a deal for Qatar to purchase a 5,000km range EWR to enhance its missile defences.

‘Qatar is another Gulf country where our partnership has accelerated over the last several years. It hosts our Combined Air Operations Centre, which is critical to managing the coalition air campaigns over Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan and our militaries are increasingly interoperable in air, land, and ballistic missile defence,’ he added.

In July 2013 Qatar announced its intent to purchase the A/N FPS-132 Block 5 EWR and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $1.1 billion.

The principal contractor, Raytheon, describe the AN/FPS-132 system as designed to detect missile launches that take place thousands of miles away to provide advanced warning time to alert command and control centres and cue fire control systems.

‘This highly reliable radar requires very low manning, yet will operate 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, providing up to 360 degrees of coverage out to 5,000km,’ said Steve Sparagna, chief engineer for the AN/FPS-132 EWR. ‘It is the ideal sensor to deter and detect hostile missile launches.’

According to Michael Elleman, a senior fellow for missile defence with IISS, the system in future can provide not only Qatar but a unified GCC ballistic missile defence system an early warning capability against any Iranian ballistic missile launches.

Qatar currently has requested in 2012 Qatar 11 Patriot PAC-3 launchers and 246 Patriot MIM-104E guidance enhanced missiles in addition to a 2014 order of 12 THAAD launchers, 150 THAAD missiles, two THAAD fire control and communications units and two AN/TPY-2 THAAD radars to complement the EWR.

Highly likely it's for the combined defense of all Gulf-States and to put a check on Israel and Iran in case they do any funny business.

After all Israel has been weirdly working towards more and more advanced Missiles .
