New Delhi:

More than 60 shops in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, have been sealed following Thursday's mega protests across the country against the Centre's new citizenship law. The crackdown by the state administration comes after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's promise of action on protests - "We will take badla (revenge) on them," he had said. "There was violence in Lucknow and Sambhal and we will deal with it strictly. All properties of those involved in damaging public assets will be seized and auctioned to compensate for the losses," Yogi Adityanath had said. "They have been captured in video and CCTV footage. We will take "badla," he added.

The crackdown in Muzaffarnagar -- an area hit by riots in 2013 -- started soon. By the evening, 67 shops were sealed. No sealing has started in Lucknow or Sambhal, which had witnessed huge violence. Some notices for sealing have been distributed in Lucknow.

Muzaffarnagar witnessed violence on Friday, along with 12 other districts in the state. The violence had started in the afternoon, soon after Friday prayers. Around 10 bikes and several cars were torched and public property was vandalised. Around 30 people were injured, 12 of them were police officers.

It is not known yet how the owners of the shop were identified as wrongdoers by the administration. "The mob had gathered outside these shops and we are still investigating who are responsible for the violence," Abhishek Yadav, a senior officer of the local police, said.

There is also no law regarding sealing and auctioning property of the guilty to recoup money for damages in public property through violence or clashes.

Thirteen people died in protests held across 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh Friday. The list includes Saharanpur, Deoband, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Sambhal, Aligarh, Bahraich, Ferozabad, Kanpur, Bhadohi and Gorakhpur.

Parts of the state are under prohibitory orders and internet has been unplugged. 705 people have been arrested and the police have filed 124 cases.

Since the Yogi Adityanath government came to power in 2017 in Uttar Pradesh, his government had sought recommendations about closure in over 100 riot cases related to Muzaffarnagar. The government has sought permission from courts to close at least 74 of these 100 cases, but all of these are pending.

LUCKNOW/ MUZAFFARNAGAR: Two days after UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that the cost of damage to properties during the anti-citizenship act protests would be “avenged” with fines collected from those responsible, the administration in several districts of the state started proceedings on Saturday by identifying and sealing properties of the accused.
Meanwhile, one more person died in Rampur in a fresh spate of violence on Saturday. Another person succumbed to his injuries late on Saturday that he received during recent Kanpur clashes. So far, 18 people have lost lives during statewide protests since Thursday.

Armed with a Supreme Court order of 2018, the administration in Muzaffarnagar sealed 50 shops belonging to alleged rioters who caused damage to public property. The sealed shops are all in the trouble-hit Minakshi Chowk and Kachchi Sadak areas of the town. SSP Abhishek Yadav told TOI, “We have to confirm why these shops were kept closed and mobs had also gathered around the shops. An investigation is on into the matter.”

The action, significant both because of the speed and scale, is part of the state-wide campaign the administration has worked out to punish those allegedly responsible for violence. Sources said the campaign is expected to act as a deterrent. Firozabad police chief Sachindra Patel said the NSA will be used against the rioters.

UP scans video footage to identify vandals, take action against them
The district administration in Lucknow, where mobs fought pitched battles with cops, formed a four-member panel to assess the damage. Chandra Vijay Singh, the district magistrate of Firozabad, the site of severe violence, said stringent action will be taken against the guilty. “At present we are identifying them,” he added
Amid the daily protests and violence, the cause of casualties itself is likely to become a source of confrontation with the UP police chief sticking to his claim that his “boys” did not fire a single shot over the past 36 hours. “All the deaths took place in cross-firing and this will become clear in the post-mortem examination,” he said. “We are clear and transparent on this. If anyone died due to our firing, we will conduct a judicial inquiry and take action. But nothing happened from our side,” Singh asserted.
UP Police, who earlier accused rioters of using children as shields, have said that they recovered 405 shells of countrymade pistols from protest sites across the state. Police have so far arrested 705 people and lodged 124 FIRs.
While there were reports of anti-CAA protests turning violent in Rampur, Muzaffarnagar and Kanpur on Saturday, other districts remained quiet. The administration and police in over 20 violence-hit districts have started identifying the “perpetrators” for penal action.
n Gorakhpur, police claimed to have spotted 50 trouble-mongers from video footage. Their images have been put up at key road intersections to facilitate identification. Farrukhabad SP Anil Kumar Misra said, “Over 200 unidentified and 25 named persons have been booked in Farrukhabad city, while 31 have been named and 250 unknown have been booked in Maudarwaza. The assets of the accused would be seized to pay for the losses of public and private properties.

Koti Koti pranam to Yogi ji....Although the rioters can challenge this in court of law,and may finally get their property rights back,it is going to be years of roaming around the courts, paying the lawyers and corrupt police,it is going to be tough days ahead for these violent miscreants.

879 arrested, 5000 bound down, 135 cases registered, 15 dead : UP DGP

As many as 879 people have been arrested while 5000 were 'bound down' as a preventive measure in Uttar Pradesh, in the wake of the violent protests against Citizenship (Amendment) Act and proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). "Adequate police arrangements have been made in all districts in the wake of protests. Police, Paramilitary, Rapid Action Force (RAF), PAC, Quick Reaction Team (QRTs) are patrolling the areas," said OP Singh, Director General of Police (DGP), UP. "Till now, 879 people have been arrested under substantive offences while 5000 persons who may instigate violence or vitiate atmosphere are bound down on the basis of suspicion," he added. "A total of 135 criminal cases have been registered against the miscreants. Fifteen people have died while 288 police personnel are injured," said the top cop.

Keep doing this.... bhangee fundos are looking for a one way ticket to civil war. This is the perfect blueprint to alienating and marginalising over a quarter of a billion people.

It seems whenever bjp wants to divert attention from the real issues it brings either the Pak/Muslim or Kashmir card....

How can the government seize property without people being convicted by the court for their crimes and court passing the judgement on the amount of loss to the government's ex checker and the compensation that the government is entitled to recover from the convicts?

I am pretty sure courts will take suo moto case in this regard and pass restraining orders against the government.

It can't..they might have simply seized the bank accounts...these rioters will now have to go to court .

Pakistan MUST unite Muslim nations and liberate India.
Many poorer beghairat Muslims are already leaving either the country or Islam in the hope that they will be treated better. Most educated well off Muslims have become more strong in their Imaan. But the community is definitely getting divided. A lot of arms and ammunition collected for self defence was captured by the UP police. Things are really bad.
