Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has called on the United Nations to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, reiterating that the recognition of Palestinians as a state cannot be delayed any longer.

“United Nations and each UN member will face a real test in their response to Palestinians' request for recognition as a sovereign state,” Davutoğlu told in his speech at a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the sidelines of the UN meetings in New York on Friday.

Palestinians asked the United Nations on Friday to accept them as a member state, sidestepping nearly two decades of troubled negotiations in the hope this dramatic move on the world stage would reenergize their quest for an independent homeland.

Davutoğlu said it is high time for Israel to see that the recognition of the Palestinian state cannot be delayed anymore, adding that the more Israel disrespects international law and defies calls for peace the more isolated it will become.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also called on world nations during his UN address on Thursday to recognize Palestine as a sovereign nation.

Davutoğlu said any meaningful peace negotiation can only be made between two equal state, dismissing Israel’s call for peace talks despite continuing settlement activities in the West Bank and Gaza.

"Wisdom and conscience calls us to support the Palestinians. UN members shall avoid making a mistake on that," Davutoğlu said, adding the the OIC meeting was set to adopt a declaration that would express solidarity with the Palestinians.

He also said Turkey was set to submit a draft resolution to the UN over the Israeli siege on Gaza.
