Dalai Lama in ‘informal’ talks to return to Tibet
AFP | Oct 2, 2014, 03.20 PM IST

DHARAMSALA: The Dalai Lama indicated on Thursday that he was in informal talks with China to make a historic pilgrimage to Tibet after more than half a century in exile.

The Tibetan spiritual leader said he had "made clear" his desire to undertake the pilgrimage to a sacred mountain in his homeland to contacts in China, including retired Communist Party officials.

"It's not finalized, not yet, but the idea is there," the 79-year-old told AFP in an interview in Dharamshala, where he lives.

"Not formally or seriously, but informally... I express, this is my desire, and some of my friends, they are also showing their genuine interest or concern," he added.

"Recently, some Chinese officials, for example the deputy party secretary in the autonomous region of Tibet, he also mentioned the possibility of my visit as a pilgrimage to that sacred place."

The Dalai Lama has long expressed a desire to visit the Wutai Shan mountain, considered sacred by Tibetans.

His comments on Thursday come amid speculation of an easing of tensions with China, which in the past has decried the spiritual leader as a "splittist" and accused him of seeking secession.

The exiled monk, who retired from politics in 2011, says he is fighting for greater autonomy for Tibetan areas.

Last month, an anonymous blog post appeared briefly on a Chinese-run website describing the Dalai Lama's return in positive terms, before it was taken down.

It was seen by some experts as an indication that China's tone may be softening — a view shared by the Dalai Lama.

On Thursday, he welcomed recent comments by China's President Xi Jinping on the importance of Buddhism in Chinese society and said he was "optimistic" about the current leadership in Beijing.

"This is something very new, a Communist Party leader saying something about spirituality," said the exiled leader, who recently described Xi as "more open-minded" than his predecessors.

The Dalai Lama, who enjoyed a close relationship with Xi's father before he fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising, also praised the Chinese leader for a crackdown on official corruption.

"These things show he (Xi) is approaching these problems more realistically," said the Dalai Lama.

But he criticised China's treatment of dissidents, including the Uighur writer Ilham Tohti, who was recently sentenced to life in prison for separatism.

"There is some arrest of dissidents — some intellectual people — such as very recently a Uighur writer," he said.

"These people firstly are not anti-government, not anti-people. So I think not necessary... I think actually long run, harmful."

The Chinese leadership likes to portray itself as wise and good leaders.

I see little wisdom in how Tibet was *actually* treated (very badly).

You'd score favor-points in my book if you allow the Tibetans to reflourish their religiion, monestaries, and their autonomic-region leader their Dalai Lama.

And supporters of China on this forum, you are often mismanaged misguided fools when it comes to your Holy Leadership in Beijing. Don't try to make a case for how Tibet was not / hardly mistreated by the Chinese government. Your government keeps the truth hidden behind layers upon layers of misinformation and secrecy enforced by state violence..

This statement is very true, and very true in every country . Only those who are so brainwashed or blind can't see it.

I believe near the very end of his life, he will visit Tibet and China again.

Ended the confusion between him and his sect with CCP forever.

But some stubborn Exile Tibetan will remain to choose to stay in India, living in the illusion of democracy.

It's nothing wrong to have Tibetan Indian and Tibetan Chinese.

illusion of democracy.
See its statements like this that make me wonder about the future of the CCP. I always believed that they'd fall eventually, but now it seems more and more Chinese seem to think that the CCP autocracy is better than accountable governments. Or more or less. Democracy may not be perfect but its certainly better than anything else tried so far.

More so for dictatorships, autocracy and oligarchies. For what its worth, democracy's are more transparent, when national interest are not at stake. Take into account of bullish behaviour that of the media in democracy. Example being the water gate incident during nixons reign. Ever wonder whom the CCP hand full are accountable towards?
There is a war within the CCP itself against the have nots and the ones that have. The patriots to China and the walking examples of conflict of interest, however this barely makes news.

I call it as illusion of democracy, because from my observation it seems some exiled Tibetan lost their main purpose and fall into democracy movement, as they are lead by CIA. CIA turned them into democracy activists.

Whatever mainland China have better political system than democracy, I let mainland members here to answer your question.

Any news about China mostly are censored in the West.

Especially about political life, public debate, government accountability, democratic life, government public relationship, people voice, etc.

There are only one narrative about mainland China: totalitarian and deceiving.

as a self declared son of india he should stay out chinese territory including tibet.

Yeah, no. Unlike where you comes from, China is a secular state and frankly, has been secular longer than your nation's entire history. Religion doesn't take precedence over people's well being and subjecting 99% of the Tibetan population to slavery just the religious caste can lord over them has absolutely no point at all.

Dalai Lama is nothing but a fraudster. If he is so concern with his people, why does he live in India? Why doesn't he "suffer" along with his fellow Tibetans? On the surface he speaks of peace and tolerance, while secretly(exposed in 1998) joining American's CIA in undermining CCP's govt. Now seeing his fellow Tibetan's lives becoming better everyday, Dalai Lama, who has outlived his usefulness for the CIA , is of course eager to return to a good life. I'd say sure, Dalai Lama should return to China, in chains and handcuffs.

What???

I think most of mainlander here are heavily brainwashed.

I don't think Dalai Lama is that bad, almost all people in Taiwan respect him.

The bad people in exile Tibetan are those who work for the CIA.

They just borrow Dalai Lama name to create chaos in China as well as separatism.

And these people will prefer to stay in India, or if they choose to come back to Tibet, they will lead a mass occupy protest like in HK right now, kind of CIA trojan horse.

There will be no peaceful day in Tibet and unrest will happen everyday.

Not because of Tibet nor Dalai Lama, but because of democracy, aka CIA.

that's the official propaganda line fed to the chinese people. we here in the west were shown a different picture. people happy with their religion in tibet for thousands of years. you forced them to conform to chinese ideals rather than their own. with rampant oppression and the destruction of nearly all monestaries in tibet. bad bad china. give the hongkongese protesters what they want, give the tibetans back their monestaries and their religion, and then china's leaders can have my respect.

'We dont care about your respect' - no you care only for your own egos and paycheck levels, that's your problem. greed of political power and luxury wealth. so much for the respectability of the chinese leadership, if there ever was one after they started on marxism.

Not gonna happen. We should wait until he dies and install our own lama.
oppress the tibetans, hong kong-ese, or the taiwanese any further than you're trying today, and you're gonna have issues with me. i'm not afraid of any china man or woman. nor impressed by their military skills.

you can't blame the dalai lama for seeking international help after what his country had to endure. he is the legitimate leader of the COUNTRY tibet. i deny china's right to the tibettan territory. it's an ongoing occupation that needs to end.

i suggest you not underestimate my influence that i've accumulated since 9/11, chinese leadership & supporters thereof..

nor my ability to stay alive and a nuisance you can't handle.
