Developed to handle explosives and IEDs, remotely operated vehicle will soon have weapons, more power, night vision
Terrorists fighting the army in insurgency-hit areas will soon have to face a new combatant that they cannot kill. The Research and Development Establishment (R&DE), Dighi, is developing a weaponised version of the ‘bomb hunter’ Daksh robot specifically for fighting militants alongside soldiers.

The R&DE is one of the several laboratories of the Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO),.country’s premier weapons maker. The Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Daksh was originally developed for handling bombs like Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and officially inducted into the army in December last year.

Lethal firepower
Christened Gun Mounted Robot (GMR), it will have a 7.62 mm light machine gun with ‘belt-fed ammunition’ and a 30 mm grenade launcher. The GMR will not only pack lethal firepower but will also have night vision and thermal imaging equipment.

Dr. Alok Mukherjee, who heads the Robotics Development Center of R&DE, said that the robot could replace soldiers in sensitive locations in insurgency-hit areas thereby minimising human losses. “The original platform, which carried the Daksh was too slow for a weaponised version. So we designed a much faster and silent electrical engine that is four times powerful than the original. The batteries will also be replaced with newly developed ones which can last longer along with the range which will be increased to 1km from 0.5 km,” Mukherjee said.

He, however, refused to divulge technical and performance details of the engine citing security reasons. 2 varieties of tyres GMR will also have two types of tyres, one for urban environment and the other will be pneumatic tyres for crosscountry terrains. However, the notable feature is not the weapons but the Target Tracking System where the guns can move in direction of a moving target after ‘locking on’ with the camera. “We are trying to enhance the accuracy of the TTS and fine-tuning the integration with the camera so that it cannot miss fast moving targets,” he said.

R&DE has already completed the prototype version and it will be another 2 years until the final product is ready after a series of tests and alterations. “We are open to selling the robot to paramilitary and other state police forces,” he said.

Drones from sky and this on land. Its not looking good for the terrorwalas. Good for our soldiers though.

.
wonder what weapons they'll put on there. They should make a light version with an autonomous mode , with something .50bmg , grenade launcher and atgm versions, that can be deployed off a fast patrol vehicle by the special forces to cover their rear when they carry out operations behind enemy lines . These babies can be of huge utility if developed for special operations purposes

Its time to work on gun mounted exo-skeleton robots. Keeping the height and centre of mass low but increasing the agility is the key. Integration of corner shot gun, flash bombs, etc. to make it more versatile.

You are being very far fetched . What about first developing own potent assault rifle. ???On few occasions DRDO has really disappointed us.
Dear you can't wait for one technology to develop while postponing development of other. Its the same way you say stop funding ISRO, focus on aircraft, gun, tank manufacturing or eliminate poverty.

Institutes like IITs already have projects with various international defense organizations like EADS (my friend is working on programming of robots funded by EADS). So there is no problem in funding such projects in these institutes.

For country like us we have to have parallel development of present and future technologies to catch up with other advanced countries. Otherwise we will always be dependent on other countries for advanced technologies like we do now.

.
I don't defer your views about concurrent developments of new techs.I was just putting question mark on the ability of innovation capability of DRDO workforce in few important arenas.Roping in new minds of renowned tech institutes is always good idea.
Innovation capability of DRDO is not the problem problem is lack of funding at such projects as success ratio of DRDO is miserable or it gets delayed too much.

What we need is funding by Department of Science and Technology (DST) to various research groups /scientists working in governmental and private institutes. I met with a guy who has crores of funding to research on spread of dengue fever in Delhi. They had all the data but no mathematical model and they were looking for one expert mathematician. Thing is these researchers have money but there is way less collaboration. Second is most of the breakthrough ideas generally don't get funding easily. In india thinking out of the box is a crime. In india quantity of publication matters not quality. This oftenly discourage post grad. student to join organizations like DRDO.

One possible solution is inviting private sectors and foreign collaborators. If not, atleast for funding from them to local researchers will help in developing technologies like these.

Newer, faster, longer endurance Daksh with automatic grenade launcher and machine gun will be a formidable weapons fr our ground soldiers.

DRDO....
