Pssst, want to buy a bridge? Czech thieves dismantle 10-ton structure after faking documents saying it was condemned

Most metal thieves confine themselves to drain covers and the lead from church roofs.

But in the Czech Republic they think a little bigger.

A gang in Slavkov dismantled an entire ten-ton bridge and 200 metres of track.

They arrived at a depot with forged paperwork saying the footbridge over a disused railway track had been condemned and had to come down.

Railways spokesman Pavel Halla said: ‘The thieves said they had been hired to demolish the bridge, and remove the unwanted railway track to make way for a new cycle route.

‘It was only after they had gone that checks were made and we realised we’d been had. The cost of replacing the bridge will run into millions.’
