At least 37 people were killed and dozens more were injured when a heavy thunderstorm hit Pakistan’s eastern province of Punjab, news reports said on Saturday.

Lahore was worst hit, with 11 people including six children killed in the provincial capital. Seven people were killed and 60 injured in the neighbouring district of Sheikhupura. Nineteen deaths occurred in other districts of Punjab.

Most of the casualties were caused by falling roofs or walls and road accidents. Winds with a speed of 93 kilometres per hour uprooted trees and destroyed power lines, cutting the power supply for hours in Punjab, The News International newspaper reported.

Landfall likely near Karachi

The deaths occurred as the country’s southern coastal belt was preparing for Cyclone Phet to make landfall after hitting the coast of Oman on Friday. The cyclone was expected to make landfall near the commercial hub Karachi and in the nearby province of Baluchistan on Sunday with “maximum sustained winds of 100 to 120 kilometers per hour,” Pakistan’s Meteorological Department said.

The storm has already started to create havoc in Baluchistan, which saw 133 millimetres of rainfall during the last 24 hours and flooding in some areas, the department reported on Saturday. Authorities are evacuating tens of thousands of people to safe areas and the country’s army and navy have been put on alert.

Phet, already weakened from earlier this week, was positioned about 200 kilometers north—east of Oman’s coastal city of Sur and 650 kilometers south—west of Karachi, the Indian Meteorological Department said in a Saturday morning bulletin.

“Available observations and numerical weather prediction models guidance suggest that the system would weaken further and move east—north—eastward towards Pakistan coast,” the IMD bulletin said.

Widespread rainfall expected in Gujarat

The cyclone, located 850 kilometers north—west of India’s Gujarat state, was expected to bring widespread rainfall in coastal Gujarat over the next 24 hours accompanied by squally winds. Sea conditions off the north Gujarat coast was expected to be rough and fishermen had been advised not to venture out.

Every year these cyclones come just before the rainy reason and suck the intensity out of the South West monsoons in India, this halts the routine advancement of the South West monsoons and delays the rains.

Damn, after such a hot summer this season, there is not going to be respite any time soon.

KARACHI: There is no potential threat to the Karachi Port, said Commander Coastal Area, Admiral Tayyab Ali during a press conference on Saturday.

He stated that 70 per cent of the population along the coastal belt had been moved to safer places and camps.

“No more fishermen in the turbulent waters. There are reports about some missing boats, but in total about eight boats are missing,” he added.

He also said that Cyclone Phet was losing intensity, however, heavy rains could wreak havoc at Sindh shores.
Earlier authorities in coastal regions of Pakistan are preparing for high winds and possible flooding and destruction from an approaching tropical storm.

The National Disaster Management Authority had said Saturday that 7,000 people had been moved to safety from low-lying areas close to the southern city of Karachi.

Tropical Storm Phet, downgraded from a cyclone, hit Oman on Friday, killing 12 people and causing heavy rains and winds.

The meteorological office said the storm is expected to make landfall in Pakistan early Sunday with winds of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour. About 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) of coastline could be affected.

The weather had already affected Pakistanis as 20 peoples had been killed due to torrential rains and winds in Baluchistan, Sindh and Punjab.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s Cyclone Warning Center, the direction of the cyclone was towards the north-east, which is the location between Karachi and Pasni.

The center informed all the provincial authorities about the effects of the cyclone.

Pakistan Navy, provincial departments and other bodies were on high alert.

Also on Saturday, sever rains with gusty winds were reported in Balochistan and Punjab. Thirty people were also injured as a result of those.

Chief Minister of Balochistan, Nawab Aslam Raisani immediately released Rs.50 million for any possible emergency which could be caused by Cyclone Phet.

Pasni, Gwadar and other coastal areas have reported having no electricity due to heavy rains. High tides have also been observed in the Jiwani waters.

MUSCAT: Cyclone Phet killed 12 people and left one missing in Oman before it barrelled on towards Pakistan, the head of Oman's civil defence force said on

Nine Omanis and three expatriates were killed by the storm, General Malek al-Muammari told Oman's state television.

An earlier statement on the official ONA news agency had said that victims included six people, among them a civil defence member, who were swept away by flood waters caused by rainfall from the cyclone.

Authorities said Phet had weakened in intensity on Friday before heading at wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres (75 miles) an hour towards Pakistan, where some 60,000 people have been evacuated from the south coast to safer areas.

The situation in Oman appeared to be returning to normal on Saturday. An AFP correspondent said that the rain had stopped and skies were relatively clear over Muscat and in most of the affected areas on Oman's eastern coast.

Rescue teams were working to reopen roads, restore electricity and repair water mains damaged by floodwaters, Muammari said in a statement carried by ONA.

Before the cyclone, the Omani authorities had taken several precautionary measures, evacuating hotels along the east coast and airlifting the residents of Masirah island to safer areas.

Residents of the island were beginning to return on Saturday, Muammari said on state television.

In 2007, cyclone Gonu tore through Oman, killing at least 49 people and causing damage worth 3.9 billion dollars.
