Tropical Cyclone Phet Shows ‘Signs’ of Weakening, Bureau Says

June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Tropical cyclone Phet in the Arabian Sea is showing signs of weakening and may cross the Oman coast tomorrow morning, the Indian weather office said today.

“Due to the proximity to the land surface, the system is interacting with land surface and shows sign of weakening,” the India Meteorological Department said in a statement

Tropical Cyclone Phet is a dangerous category 4 hurricane with top winds of 145 mph.

Phet is located in the Arabian Sea and is now the 2nd strongest Arabian Sea cyclone on record just behind category 5 Tropical Cyclone Gonu which produced major destruction in Oman in 2007.

TC Phet is stewing and brewing in VERY warm waters of the Arabian Sea. Sea surface temperatures are 30 to 31 degrees C which is about 86 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit.

The higher the ocean water temperature the more available heat energy for the cyclone to feed off of and intensify.

It is quite possible that Phet will reach category 5 status before making landfall. It may indeed rival 2007's TC Gonu.







As of Wednesday afternoon, the projected path takes Phet towards southeastern Oman by Thursday morning then bending to the east and making a strike near Karachi, Pakistan.
