NEW DELHI: A cyclone storm 'Hudhud' after crossing Andaman and Nicobar islands on Wednesday noon is expected to hit the districts of north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast with maximum sustained wind speed of more than 130-130 kmph gusting to 150 kmph by Sunday afternoon.

The met department said that the cyclonic storm would take the form of severe cyclonic storm by Thursday morning and then very severe cyclonic storm on October 10. "The cyclone is likely to make landfall between Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Gopalpur in Odisha on October 12 noon. The cyclone impact will be less severe than 'Phailin',"said Laxman Singh Rathore, director general, India Meteorological Department.

Four districts of Odisha - Khurda, Puri, Ganjam and Gajapati - and three districts -Vishakapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram of Andhra Pradesh are largely to be impacted. An alert has been sounded in nine out of 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh where standing crop of paddy, followed by groundnut, sugarcane, pulses and other horticulture crops has yet to be harvested.

Similarly, the Odisha government has put 16 districts under high alerts where paddy again accounts to be a major crop."It is early to say what will be the losses and how much agriculture land will be impacted," said an agriculture official of Andhra Pradesh. He added that water logging could also impact the standing crop of paddy, cotton and maize. Leading rice exporter from Andhra Pradesh, BV Krishna Rao, managing director of Pattabhi Agro Foods, said that the damage to standing crop will not be similar to the previous year.

"The paddy crop has not reached ripening stage, so we don't see major damage to the crop. Also, the major paddy growing belt of East and West Godavari and Krishna district are unlikely to be hit,"he said.In Odisha the agriculture department expect losses not be as severe as it was during the Phailin cyclone the previous year. "The cyclone should impact less than 5 lakh hectare, which was the case the previous year-,"said RS Gopalan, agriculture director, Odisha. Over 1-1.5 lakh hectare land under short duration paddy, which was in harvesting stage in southern Gunjam is expected to be hit, he said. Paddy has been planted in 38 lakh hectare out of the 56 lakh hectare kharif crop this season.

It was unlikely for farmers to harvest paddy in this short duration said Gopalan as the moisture content was still there.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm lay centred at 1430 hours IST of October 8th,over southeast Bay of Bengal , about 1010 km southeast of Gopalpur and 1050 km east southeast of Vishakhapatnam.

The system would continue to move west northwestwards, intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and into a very severe cyclonic storm during subsequent 36 hours. The system would cross north Andhra Pradesh & south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam & Gopalpur around noon of 12th October.

The cyclone, which crossed Andaman and Nicobar Islands close to Long Island on Wednesday damaged thatched huts. The breaking of tree branches caused minor damage to power and communication lines. In the next 24 hours, the department forecast heavy rainfall at few places over the islands. Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea along and off Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
