Cross-border attacks: Troops reinforcement likely on Kunar border

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan might relocate a ‘significant number’ of troops from the lawless tribal areas to man its border towns along Afghanistan’s Kunar and Nuristan provinces to stop the increasing cross-border incursions by al Qaeda-affiliated Taliban, officials have said.
The move is expected to add further complications to Islamabad’s troubled relations with Washington which have, of late, been calling for more deployment in the tribal badlands to combat militants it blamed for attacks on international forces in Afghanistan. A top military official told The Express Tribune on Sunday that authorities had already ordered reinforcing border checkpoints in Chitral and Dir districts after a brazen attack by militants allegedly based in Kunar.
Close to 30 security personnel were killed and some other were missing after approximately 300 armed militants mounted an audacious attack inside Pakistan’s Chitral district on Saturday morning. It was one of several incursions by Taliban from Afghanistan into Pakistan in recent months, forcing Pakistani military authorities to take extra measures to protect areas along the porous and mostly unprotected border.
A huge number of Pakistani Taliban took refuge in Nuristan and Kunar provinces in eastern Afghanistan after they were flushed out from Bajaur tribal district and Swat valley through military operations in 2009. Pakistani officials said that it had also been decided to intensify aerial surveillance of the border to put in place an early warning mechanism in case of militants’ movement from Afghanistan towards Pakistan.
The official, who wished not to be named, added that helicopter gunships and troops will be on standby to react if they were given signals.
When asked, he refused to give the exact number of troops being deployed in Dir and Chitral districts and the areas in tribal regions from where they were being relocated, saying it would be tantamount to revealing ‘operational details’ of a new security policy.
Around 100,000 troops are deployed in the tribal areas to combat Taliban. Though the official did not mention if North Waziristan was among the areas from where troops were being relocated, it might cause more bitterness in Pak-US ties.

Of course if ISAF forces can't fulfill their duties in Afghanistan then it doesn't means Pakistan should not think over security of area. It’s pretty clear that these kinds of attacks couldn't be launched without prior permission of US/NATO & Afghan government.

We have to secure our boundaries and we should take every measure to do that.

Take out more forces from eastern border and reinforce your western border...Simple.
I think the interpretation of "threat" will change in GHQ.

Good move by PA, if you 1000 times complain about this to Afghan government they will not do anything because they aren't part of the agenda and if you 1000 times complain about this to NATO/US they will every time turn deaf so better you guys keep your homes safe from these jahils.

We have enough troops to guard our border with Afghanistan. No need to remove any troops from eastern border.

Good move with the gunships n UAVs to keep these Talibastards in check.. May all of them die slowly n painfully.... n burn in hell.

May God protect our troops and Afghan troops fighting these dogs Ameen.

@ Ahmed,Sher Malang and all the muslims... akhtar mubaraksha brothers.

Why dont you guys just fence your border with them place mines along the border

the locals said, while the attack took place, choppers were flying over... and we all know who patronage these attackers..

hence whether these are Afghan or Pakistani outlaws, this is outrageous that they go and destroy villages and kill civilians...

The border cant be fence nor would the afghans n the west agree to it.... we tried it in the past and the afghan govt took it down.

Mine we just cant mine thousands of KMs of land... heck the US cant secure their small border with mexico and ur talking abt Pakistan with limited resources and all.

Not possible.

Heck even the afghans dont have post on their side.. while we have dozens... it needs mutual cooperation frm both sides... Pakistan alone cant do it.

I also believe these cross-border attacks are not just attacks! these cowards are only killing innocent civilians both side of the border, I must say something that till the west don't achieves it's goals in this region the war will not end.

@Rafi - Inshallah brother, lets just don't let others get benefit from problems between Afghan gov and Pakistani gov and lets join hands to hands for protecting our motherlands.

@Pakistani Nationalist - Manana wrora, taso ta ham mubarak wee aw tolo muslim ummah ta khushhaal aw nekmargha Eid ghwaram.
