Croatian President Zoran Milanović on Sunday criticised his country’s decision to buy 12 Rafale fighters from France because they are “useless” and not what the country needs.

Croatia bought the used Rafales from France in November 2021.

“So now we don’t have air defence systems, but we have 12 aeroplanes,” Milanović said at a May Day celebration in north-western Croatia.
Referring to the war in Ukraine, he said: “You can see now how long planes last in this war… Wouldn’t we have been better off with 100 drones or 100 anti-aircraft systems?”
“We have bought something we don’t need. They are useless for warfare and will only be good for showing off,” said the president, known for his controversial statements that have already ruffled feathers in Croatia and the EU.

I heard this guy's weird.

“So now we don’t have air defence systems, but we have 12 aeroplanes,”
12 planes without the radar stations on the ground and anti aircraft infrastructure are kinda useless.

That's what I read. That he makes controversial statements every now and then for some reason.
reason is simple, he is on odds with their PM and he is trying to undermine him at any given occasion

Ehhh :what: ...

What exactly was the basis of their doctrine when they placed an order for these 12 Rafales?

Any AWACs or EW-capable aircrafts to go along those shinny new jets?

For 1/2 the price they could've gotten a number of used Vipers (Block 30) from the US - MLU'ed ofcourse.

The rest could have gone for other equipment.

Really odd decision making by their leadership.

Rafale's are NOT useless!
ngl for croatia it is seeing that aerial warfare structure isnt gonna support those planes but why should they care if russia can even get to them after germany and poland and romania
He has a point if we look at two recent wars, Karabakh and Ukraine.

Soon India might also realize the mistake of buying Rafale
drones and cannot halt an effective ground offensive or maintain air suoeriorty or shoot down planes bombing your troops

These countries mainly use fighters to intercept airliners in emergencies and other aircraft that aren’t complying to their instructions.

Question is...who are they trying to defend from? If they want them in case of a future war with Serbia, then 12 Rafale are a good purchase. They should also buy some UAVs too of course and some modern AA systems.

If it's Hungary, which is very doubtful, they have about 12 Gripen. Who else? Slovenia? No. BiH? About 24% of the population are Croats there and the Bosniaks have been allies of theirs since the end of the war.

Are they afraid of Serbian Mig-29s?

If as the article suggest they spent their entire Airforce budget on just a dozen fighters (no matter how advanced they are) and leave no money for other necessary equipments SAM, UAV, AWACs etc etc etc then it was a stupid move.

Why do they even need fighters jets in the first place? Nobody cares about Croatia.
