Country’s 18 power plants out of operation

Out of 122 power generation plants in the country, 18 now remained out of operation for various reasons, including technical fault, maintenance, overhauling, gas shortage, drop in water level, and non-renewal of contracts with the owners of private power plants, according to official data available with PDB website.

These 18 plants have a generation capacity of 2,160 MW while the country's 122 plants' total installed production capacity is 12,179 MW and derated capacity 12,578 MW, according to a report by UNB.

Out of the 18 power generation units, some with 793 MW capacity remained out of production for gas shortage while others with 195 MW capacity cannot generate electricity due to a fall in water level in hydropower plants.

Besides, the production of some 545 MW power looks uncertain for various reasons, including long maintenance time and expiry of contracts with the government.

Of them, only 100 MW Baghabari plant was supposed to resume operation on May 30.

However, nothing was mentioned in the PDB website about the possible resumption of operation of other plants.

Apart from the fall in generation, the 230 kV Ashuganj-Sirajganj line -- a major transmission line -- was affected by a recent storm.

Two towers of the line which are located at the two ends of the Meghna River collapsed following the storm, disrupting the power transmission to the country's northern part.

How much of BD gas requirement is met domestically and how much is imported?

I cannot say how much is the demand and supply of gas. But, the demand is not fulfilled. This is why the govt is contemplating to build infrastructure for importing LNG. Reliance itself will use LNG for its production of power.

So right now BD imports 0 gas (but plans to commence to meet deficit)? Is there any projection of how much gas BD will be producing per year domestically for say next 5 - 10 years and what the total projected demand will be, so we can get an idea whats the long term import requirement?

Any idea about power generation and power consumption projection? What is the current and projected gap?

The BERC Act prohibits the regulator from raising gas prices twice a year
The new gas prices have come into effect from Thursday, a day after the Supreme Court stayed a High Court order that halted the government’s decision for raising gas prices for all consumers for six months.

Households will now have to pay Tk 900 for single burners and Tk 950 for double burners. Other sectors that use gas will also have to pay the increased prices, reports UNB.

On February 23, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) hiked gas prices by a weighted average of 22.7%. It then announced a decision to raise the prices twice this year – in March and in June – ignoring the BERC Act that prohibits it from doing so.

From March, the monthly gas bill for single burners rose to Tk 750 from Tk 600 and double burners cost Tk 800, up from Tk 650.

Before that, gas price was last raised in September 2015.

The High Court on February 28 slapped a six-month embargo on the government’s planned second phase price hike.

But the BERC moved the apex court against the order. Appellate Division Chamber Judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed the High Court order on Tuesday.

The court also sent the petition to the regular bench of Appellate Division for hearing on June 5.

Power generation capacity is about 15300MWs. Which clearly not enough to meet the demands. The govt has plans to improve generation capacity to 24000MWs by 2021. But with increasing demands even this much won't be enough.
