Country of broken railway tracks: How will bullet train run?

Its wasn't how. It was why?
If ur population is living beloq poverty you tend to fix that first

So we shouldn't build infrastructure because we have poverty ? That's not a good excuse

They're not going to get bullet train. Or at least not by international standard of what a bullet train is

We are, apparently going to buy Shinkansen. I'm not sure whether it is bullet train by Chinese standards.

i would rather do what pakistan is doing
standardized your current tracts to run safely at 150kms with current locomotives.

We are already doing that, called semi high speed rail- tracks & signalling are being upgraded for 200 kmph & present rolling stock technology allows for doing that sort of speed. HSR is a different project.

A classic case of putting the bull before the bullock cart
Where do you normally put your bulls in Sri Lanka?

After the bullock cart?

They push it along with their foreheads? :o:

So we shouldn't build infrastructure because we have poverty ? That's not a good excuse

HSR spurs the revitalization of cities by encouraging high density, mixed-use real estate development around the stations. HSR also fosters economic development in second-tier cities along train routes.

HSR links cities together into integrated regions that can then function as a single stronger economy. HSR broadens labor markets and offers workers a wider network of employers to choose from. HSR encourages and enables the development of technology clusters with fast easy access between locations.

HSR also expands visitor markets and tourism while increasing visitor spending.

I think i was talking about mars. No i will not spwns millions to send probe to mars if i have people dying of hunger

No one dies in India out of hunger- that would be a famine. As for undernourishment we have reduced it to 15% of population.

.
I think i was talking about mars. No i will not spwns millions to send probe to mars if i have people dying of hunger (greater than total people in Africa)
And that would Not be wise. Because the resultant publicity and technology benefits from the 75 million spent on the mars probe has given back to India about 2 billion in revenue already.

Oh and India plans a mars lander by 2021 and a first run to Venus while continuing to work on poverty reduction.

NASA doesn't stop because there are a million homeless people in the US and several million without health insurance or their education system is in a shambles.

Its wasn't how. It was why?
If ur population is living beloq poverty you tend to fix that first

I have seen this argument a million times and now let me try to put my thoughts to that.

More that a billion people with huge landmass and natural resources will become a hub of economy and can/shall pose in front of western/Chinese civilization as formidable force. This is why India was invaded in first place because we were rich without any teeth.

It seems like a very noble idea and advice to tell a nation to eliminate poverty first but what about if that nation eliminates poverty and won't act in "advising" nation's interest or takes its place.

eg, If India get to USD 20k income per capita which is still less than West, the cumulative GDP would be USD 26 trillion under same flag within same constitution and geographic area. Can you guarantee this will go down well with rest of the world ?

I cannot write much right now but gist of my argument is every nation will point to poverty levels ,but, at the same time they don't want you to be "perceived" threat by you becoming economically stronger. The idea of eliminating poverty first before spending somewhere else is a fallacy. No one will let you prosper so that you pose challenge to them. Be it economic withholding nation through NGOs or blocking fuel supplies or fueling unrest or not advising nation of impending natural calamity so as to cause destruction in emerging economies. Growth cannot be monotonous i.e, eliminating poverty.

And for those of you questioning the track.

@endyashainin creates a new account.

He has the upper hand in reporting accidents in India because of our transparency. Not like CCP when they tried to cover up that CSA rocket crash that burned down entire village (luckily filmed by a foreigner in that area next day) or crashes of J-10s

.
I have seen this argument a million times

And the interesting thing about this argument is that if the west is trying to sell arms to india...they never worry about our poverty...it's only when we spend on home made technological advances that this extreme concern suddenly surfaces.

.
ur sympathy for the ppl and opposition to starting high speed railway would have vaporised, if China was given the contract.
Oh, please, let Japanese get the contract.

What a long list!

.
bullet train was needed but not from Mum to Ahmadabad...its useless from country and Maharashtra's point of view...its an expensive gift modiji is giving to his people in Gujarat...I dont know the importance of Ahmadabad to spend almost 1 lakh crore whereas thousands are people are dying every year only in mumbai suburban railway due to overcrowding...

bullet trains were needed in routes like Mumbai-Bangalore, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Delhi....it would have made more sense! dont know what we will do by going to dry state/city like Ahmadabad!!!!

.
I am for the bullet train but if you look at how dismal we manage the tracks and the trains our heart sinks. It is better to keep common man safety first and foremost. Bullet train is just a ego booster and show off at tax payers costs, nothing else.

So india nuclear program (both weapons and civil), ISRO and everything else India has now were just ego boosts and showing off at taxpayer cost?...given they were all started when things were far far worse in India (absolutely horrid energy program, mismanaged defence sector and terrible phone/information/engineering sectors respectively).

You do realise bullet train pilot project is to develop now (at small scale) what we will need en masse down the road...rather than be behind the curve as usual when we need it? Have a look at the JICA loan arrangement before you make tall fanciful statements sitting in US.

@anant_s need your views on this topic please sir.

I have hardly any problem if the so called beggar uses his own hard cash.
However, in this case, the beggar seems to borrow money for his five star meal, thereby living beyond his means.

Funny, because one does not usually give loans out to beggars.
So clearly, the fact that this "beggar" was able to secure a loan on favorable terms, speaks volumes of his credibility and means. So again, your claim of "living beyond means" is misplaced, unless you have numbers to back it up. Show us that india is unable to pay this loan back with interest based on its current economic output.

Here is a summary of the borrowed money:

Japan is providing financial assistance for the project in the form of a loan of up to 81% of the cost at a nominal interest rate of 0.1% per annum. This loan has to be repaid in 50 years with a 15-year moratorium. The Indian Railways has identified at least five other corridors — Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Chennai, Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Nagpur and Mumbai-Nagpur — for running 300 kmph or higher speed trains. Feasibility studies are being conducted for these routes. Besides Japan, China is also in the reckoning for developing highspeed rail networks in India

.
Its wasn't how. It was why?
If ur population is living beloq poverty you tend to fix that first

The post has factual errors. Our trains run at 160 KM per hour and not 50 KMPH. We have tested Trains at 180 KMPH and probably 200 KMPH and planning to 220 KMPH. None of our train has 50 KM speed except the toy trains in some hill station.

.
The govt is talking to the chinese for another route and french for another.
Thats engineering madness. Indian rail will have to maintain 3 different train sets , which is bad from engineering and financial aspects.

Train sets themselves compromise maybe 10 - 20% of the total engineering in the system. Rest is line, systems, signalling etc which can be standardised (on the japanese pilot system).

Rest of your post I agree with more or less. Good CBA must be done with air travel...but it wont hurt to have couple pilot projects in some of the urban corridors which are short - mid range in terms of air travel.
