Dhaka, May 13 (UNB) – State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid has said Bangladesh needs $82.5-billion investment in the power sector to be a developed country by 2041.

“Of this, some $22 billion has already been invested,” he said while addressing a session on “Power for Human Development” at a conference titled “Bangladesh Rising” at the Loeb House of Harvard Business School in Cambridge of the USA on Saturday, according to message received here on Sunday.

Florida-based International Sustainable Development Institute (ISDI), Centre for International Development of Harvard Kennedy School and Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute of Harvard University jointly organised the conference.

Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Adviser Mashiur Rahman, chief coordinator of the SDG Affairs of the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad, executive chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida) Kazi Aminul Islam and general secretary of Bangladesh Economic Association Jamaluddin also spoke at the conference.

Making a presentation on the Power System Master Plan 2018, Nasrul Hamid said the country’s fuel mix for power generation was determined to be 35 percent of gas, 35 percent coal, 10 percent import of renewable and 20 percent from nuclear and other sources.

He said building a developed Bangladesh will require 60,000 MW of electricity while the use of improved technology is being increased in distribution and transmission systems.

The junior minister also mentioned that automation process is underway for improving the management system while private investment is being encouraged in the power and energy sector.

“Now, 50 percent of power is being generated by the private sector while initiative has been taken to privatise some parts of the transmission segment,” he added.

In future, Nasrul Hamid, said the distribution system will go to the private sector and now implementation of the smart grid and cashless payment system has been a demand of the time. “Once these are implemented, the electricity will turn into a merit good from the public one,” he said.

The state minister said leadership and time-befitting decisions have worked to create a positive position for Bangladesh.

I have already told this yesterday that only 10 percent of our energy will come from foreign sources and 20 percent will come from Nuclear and rest will come from LNG, Gas and Coal. Here is confirmation.

State minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid on Sunday said Bangladesh has been working to increase power generation as it needs 60,000 megawatt electricity to be a developed country by 2041.

‘Currently the power generation capacity of the country has reached to 16,046 MW while the government is working relentlessly to reach the general capacity 24,000 MW by 2021 to be a middle income country, he said.

Hamid was addressing a session on ‘Power for Human Development’ at the ‘Rising Bangladesh’ conference at Loeb House of Harvard University in Boston, the United State. International Sustainable Development Institute (ISDI) of Florida and Centre for International Development of Harvard Kennedy School and Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute of Harvard University jointly organised the conference.

Prime minister’s economic affairs advisor Mashiur Rahman, principal co-ordinator (SDG Affairs) to the Prime Minister’s Office M Abul Kalam Azad, executive chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Kazi M Aminul Islam and general secretary of Bangladesh Economic Association Jamaluddin Ahmed spoke on the occasion.

The state minister said massive initiatives are underway to build a developed Bangladesh by 2041.

The power sector needs US$82.5 million in this regard while US$ 22 million has already been invested in the sector, he added.

Hamid said the government fixed 35 per cent natural gas, 35 per cent coal, import of renewable energy 10 per cent and nuclear and other sources 20 percent as fuel mix for power generation in the Power System Master Plan-2018.

Besides, the government is making optimum utilization of modern technologies to develop power distribution and transmission system and the automation work is going on, he said.

‘We have undertaken to introduce enterprise resource planning applications and supervisory control and data acquisition systems,’ the state minister said.

‘The government encouraged private investment in the power and energy sector and meanwhile 50 per cent electricity is generating from private sector,’ he said, adding, ‘Initiative has been taken to handover a proportion of distribution and transmission line of power under private sector.’

Nasrul said installment of smart grid and introduction of cashless payment technology in the power sector is a demand of time and then the power would transform into merit goods from public goods.

He, however, said the power management would be people oriented with more investment, use of modern technology, taking appropriate plan and enhancement of capability of employees.

WTF is this idiot smoking.

By 2041 (20+ years from now) the aim is to have roughly the per capita generation capacity India has right now (340 GW+ in total)....and BD will be developed country by that?

To be considered as a developed country you need 12000 usd per capita gdp. That is the minimum Bangladesh will require in terms of electricity.

.
60 GW is roughly what Turkey and Thailand have right now (half and less than half of BD population right now)

It is to get vote. Most BD people are fed on these. Otherwise, who thinks about 20+ years later where every country is moving in parallel

Show me one large population country that has 12000 USD per capita today and the electricity generation per capita of say 60 GW/200 million ratio wise. Actually tell me any that is anywhere near to that.

.
India has 8 times more population then Bangladesh and it is likely to be around 10 times by 2041. So will India have 600 GW electricity by that time? Even if it have more then that, it is not a requirement to hae similar level per capita gdp like India to be a developed country.

This "idiot" is a lot smarter than you are.

So it may be a little larger than 60GW. The idea is that a target is required to aim for as otherwise there is no goal to reach.

I personally think that BD generation capacity will be between 80-100GW by 2041.

Your numbers are wrong on population level. India is very rapidly approaching replacement fertility level of 2.1:

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.DYN.TFRT.IN?locations=IN

Ratios are roughly (given illegal stock BD has exported to India to some degree that would get counted in census of only the latter):

1388/170.4 = 8 (2020)

1633/197 = 8.3 (2040)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...on_(United_Nations,_medium_fertility_variant)

India will never be 10 times more population as its population will peak only around 9 times BD population.

So will India have 600 GW electricity by that time?

We are going to quite comfortably add 100 GW (almost entirely renewable + gas + clean coal) in the course of 5 years (2017 - 2022), and that is a clear ramp over the 50 or so GW added in the 5 years (much more dirtier older coal based) preceding that.... so you tell me? It will be way way larger than 600 GW by 2041. Not to mention the total integral consumption (which is correlated to wealth/further investment etc).

Even if it have more then that, it is not a requirement to hae similar level per capita gdp like India to be a developed country.

So point me to just one country (since you feel India is not a fair comparison) existing today that consumes the energy ratio proposed for BD 2041 and has 12000 GDP per capita.

Actually do me one better, just tell me the highest GDP per capita any country has achieved right now at the capacity/capita BD is calling "developed" for 2041.

You personally have a fetish for used toilet paper. No one gives a shit literally what you think toilet boy.

Beside the 60000 MW Bangladesh has plan to import electricity from Nepal and Bhutan.

There are number of countries like Poland, Uruguay, Lebanon, Mexico etc.

Per capita consumption will be almost similar. For info some of the countries are located in colder region so demand for electricity is higher.

A developed country by 2041 only by building power capacity? Is it not necessary to build roads, streets, footpaths, garbage collection & anti-water logging systems, expansion of highways etc.? Go to Dhaka. All the foot paths are decorated with cables hanging from the poles to touch your neck. I wonder what our asset @UKBengali is smoking. This AL crony believes in whatever a AL Minister tries to make him believe.

Neither the uneducated minister nor the half-educated @UKBengali knows the definition of a developed country. Some years ago I heard some people talking BD is already half developed as Japan. How? The answer was: it is because some of the buildings in BD are half as tall as the Japanese ones. Now, a BD minister and @UKBengali both are forwarding the same thesis by talking about power generation. But, is it the only criteria to become a developed country?
