Countries that have shown interest in BAFs' modernization program

This is old news but something new to me. I did not know that many countries have expressed interest in Bangladesh's long term armed forces' modernization program such as USA, France, Italy, Turkey, Serbia, Czech Republic, Belarus( know about Belarus) and South Korea excluding our major suppliers Russia and China.

IS Pakistan on the list????

Some European, North American and Asian countries did show interest in the modernization of Bangladesh defense forces. This can be a good opportunity to market their products and will help and promote their products even more.

Some participants so far has been found are:

USA is on discussion about: 24-32 F-16 block 50/52, 4 C-130 with additional 20 engines, 24 T-6 Texan II as the replacement of PT-6 and T-37 tweet, Hi speed boats, radar systems to replace the age old existing few.

Russia is on discussion about 24-32 Mig-29SMT/M/M2 or Su-30MK, 24 YAK-130, 24 YAK-152, Helicopters, BTR-82A, Rocket and missile systems, Artillery systems, Rocket Artillery, Self-propelled artillery, Field artillery, Air Defence Systems, Air Defense Radars, Infantry Fighting Vehicles, Logistics and utility vehicles, Mines, Grenades launchers, Machine guns and Infantry weapons etc. This also includes the $1 billion deal signed recently.

Hmm...interesting! Though I'd love to see F-16 E/F's :hang2:

F-16 Block 50/52...How well does it do against lets say the SU-30MK or Mig 29 SMT/M/M2.Personally i'd love to see western planes in BD but i thought they were ruled out due to the fact we have no Infrastrucutre for them while with russian birds,we have current infrastructure.

We only operate 8 odd MiG-29's. It's nothing significant.

Our air force is still very limited. American warplanes may not be such a bad idea in the long term though.

Being a bit reluctant to say this out loud, but perhaps we can help the US in establishing some sort of foothold in South Asia? Just a hypothetical question by the way.

I wish new J15 land version for BD  (just a dream )

I know it's just that we already have Russian missiles and figther avionics but im not sure if the US will give us access to their Missiles right now. But you do raise a valid point and if we can afford them ,i hope we get them.I know our martime patrol aviation is only western aircraft with just german and american radars and avionics.

As far as the foothold thing goes, I think the US wants to make us a Turkey(A muslim majority Country and a success story) Where the US can maintain much better relations with us than Pakistan(Due to the Drone war and bombings and decreasing relations)The US knows that in South asia,India is too big of a world power to allign themselves with and other countries in the south asian region(Nepal,Bhutan,Sri lanka) are far too small and their economic future isn't as strong as ours. I wouldn't say a base but maybe a small survallience post on one of our Islands where they can only provide training and dock a very small number of ships for stuff like CARAT.However im not advocating for a permanent prescense.

The US already have a foothold in South Asia through Pakistan.

Bhutan and Sri Lanka are far more prosperous countries than BD, in fact Sri Lanka is also faster growing, both their economic pictures are as strong if not better than BD. Sri Lanka has the potential to be a major port hub on the order of Singapore.

BD's main outlook should be to become a manufacturing based economy especially in the electronics industry because of the readily available access to water as the country is majorly based around a delta.

Thank you. Also i meant in terms of a military as well. BD military is already much more stronger than either and due to this has has a bigger market for defence equipment since BD is still developing it's Domestic defence indsutry.
However,BD itself has a far more bigger population, and RMG is proving to be our bigger markets. Also we have more a market for Pharmacuticals in Africa than either of them and because of Peacekeeping, it has more soft power than either of the two countries allowing BD to be political ally as well as a military and economic ally. BD has recently just sequenced jute Genomes and this could lead to cheaper materials and thus increasing exports. Bangladesh's post potential relies on our government building the Sonadia deep sea port which will be relied on by many countries in the Region,we just have to beat Myanmar to it.

World bank reports state that bangladesh only need to increase it's employment rate by 2% and that will make it an MEDC, and adding on the Padma bridge and the deep sea port will increase growth rate to roughly 10%.

While sri lanka and Bhutan are growing rapidly and will become well developed economies, but so is Bangladesh and unlike those two is considered to be an NEST and a part of the N-11 and considered to a future economic power alongside the N-11s right behind the BRICS by western Economic Analysts. Bangladesh alongside India and Pakistan will be the three power houses of south Asia in the Future. However it still have major problems such as corruption, volatile Politics and still needs more energy for the country.(Although energy problems will be gone by 2016)

Bhutan is a de-facto protectorate of India, it's military strength does not come into the picture.

Both the armed forces of Sri Lanka and BD are negligible in the global context and also do not come into the picture.

BD has a far bigger population - yes

RMG- what's that?

Market for pharmas - Negligible, the market in Africa for pharmas has been cornered by India and China

Soft power - Bhutan, yes. Sri Lanka, no. SL is the most successful sporting nation in South Asia, this constitutes to great soft power.

Defence - Sri Lankan military budget is very similar to the BD military budget. Considering the fact that BD has far more servicepeople, the capital purchase budget for the SL military is going to be more. The scope for future growth in the BD defense industry is the same if not less than that of SL.

Jute genomes - While significant for BD, unless marketed properly is going to prove to be irrelevant in a global context.

Ports-Which countries in the region will depend on the Sonadia port?

Growth rates - 2 projects does not equal to a 4% increase in the growth rate for an entire economy the size of BD.

Overall: Currently BD is the second best performing economy in the region, the first being Sri Lanka and third being India.

But yeah the competition between BD and SL in terms of economic criterion will be interesting to say the least in the next few years.

1. RMG= Ready Made Garments.
2. Pharmacy sector is booming right now and demand of BD pharmacy products has increased very rapidly.
3. BD spends only 1.5 % of GDP where Sri lanka does 3% but the amount is same because BD economy is 2 times bigger than Sri lanka and Bangladesh is going to increase the expenditure on defence in coming years which will surplus Sri lanka.
4. in terms of Military capabilites, it will increase by 3 times within 10 year, keep it mind that our armed forces was kept aside from long time after liberation untill in 2010 long term modernization plan has been made.

@ 3 + 4) Is the military budget for BD set to increase this financial year?

BDforever has answered most of you questions.

However your point about growth rate can be argued against.
I mentioned if the employment rate increases 2% and these projects will be built, it will increase to ten. Lets look at the Padma Bridge, this bridge been demanded for years because it's safer and now imagine millions of Bengalis using the road and they have to pay toll fees. China itself(alongside many other countries) have suggested and proposed plans to build it and most such plans involve it running the bridge from about 20-60 years...No country would ever bother doing that unless it's going to make billions out of it. World bank reports have even stated this along will increase GDP growth rate by 2%.

Lets now look at The deep sea port. Again many countries have offered funding and propsals to build and run it for a few years. This is mainly because BD's main port is becoming overrun and won't be able to handle the amount of cargo in a few years and will fail completly by 2015/2016. As far as use goes,India itself wants to use the port and transit and give to northeast India(However, the are many, many problems about this so don't consider India the Main user)China wants to use it to give cargo and stuff to their western region. It can be used by Nepal,Bhutan. It will be quicker and cheaper. However, will likely not increase GDP by 2% more likely 0.5-1%.

Bangladesh is the second largest RMG(ready made Garments) exporter in the world. It's exports are increasing since china is moving factories to BD. The sri lankans don't have such a market and it will take a while to do so.

Pharmas-Bangladesh has been very successful, especially in countries like Sudan. Only Asian countries such as China,India,Pakistan and Bangladesh export and invest a lot in africa. Bangladesh Is also one of the five biggest Pharmas industries in the world. Yes,while china and India and export more,Bangladesh is catching up.Look at Squares pahmaceuticals LTD.

Defence industry:This varies in terms of certain areas. Sri lanka are beating bangladesh in terms of producing Mine resisted APCs. BD is only started to develop them jointly with Belarus. However, both countries have built 2 OPVs as of now. However BD plan to produce 3 more and start building 3 more Missile LPCs(or very small corvettes). According to AMI-internationa,BD will aquire TOT to build 2 type 056 corvettes in KSY(Khulna Shipyard). It will then start to produce frigates. However,Sri lanka starting much earlier have only built two and not been focusing on rapid advancement of larger ships. However they have successfully built Ultra fast Attack Craft and it is remarkbly well desgined. Both sri lanka and BD lack any home made aircraft, Both are beefing up though with Sri lanka buying 14 Mil-17 and BD having a $1 billion arms deal with russia and looking to buy around 32-40 4.5 generation figthers. However, BD has made plans to procude a light aircraft prototype by 2021. Both are working on domestic projects to build UAVs and until recently Bangladesh have started Military tech R&D with Belarus(A military which has much better equipment than either SL or BD). Defence Budgets have to be increased Steadily by BD since they do not want to harm the progress made in HDI. However, by 2021 it's likely going to be 2% of the Budget.

Although i do agree with you that SL have the best performing Economy in south Asia. However, BD and India have both been foreseen as major Economic powers alongside more. SL still has a long way to go and needs to use this period in which BD and India have decreased. Both India's and BD's growth will increase in the following years. However im not comparing BD economy to India since BD will never be able to match it.

Bangladesh should apply to GoI for protectorate status instead. :flame:
