I did indeed.

I have to say I lost respect for the Indian-American lady early on when she claimed that, in 2000, she was ahead of the conventional wisdom on "India good, China bad".

That American policy was already in play during Bill Clinton's era and got full speed under GW Bush.

Also her claim that China's UN voting record was based on avoiding setting precedents for foreign intervention (e.g. in Tawan/Tibet/Xinjaing), but India's reasons for voting similarly were altruistic and had nothing to do with Kashmir. India has been adamant about rejecting foreign intervention in Kashmir.

Frankly, one is now bored of these comparisons.

We need to just keep our head down and focus on the economy for at least 2 more decade. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to banish mass poverty and give a decent life to our massive population.

Other things will take care of themselves.

I think India needs to work on a mission mode to take our HDI rank to top 75 within a decade and top 50 within 2 decades. That is the kind of rivalry we need to have in the region, not useless rhetoric.

Balance depends on content.

It is entirely possible for a Westerner (or an Indian) to present a balanced view of the situation.

These two did not -- Lal, especially, was unabashedly an Indian cheerleader. There was no one to challenge any of their claims since the two admitted up front that they work together and agree on most points anyway. What debate?

Yes, but then there are all sorts of academics with all sorts of opinions and biases.

One needs to keep one's own counsel.

We do believe that India has a great future and can be a power for the good. Not only for just Indians but for the whole world.

It doesn't need to be reduced to some mythical "rivalry" with China or anyone else. We are just competing with ourselves, to achieve our own potential, to be the best we can be.

India has much to offer the world. The world needs us to rise and I hope we don't mess up this time.
