Education Minister Punjab, Rana Mashood, said on Sunday that the construction work for the new Information Technology University has now been resumed. He was speaking to a delegation of university teachers from southern Punjab districts when he revealed the information.

Rana Mashood said that the establishment of the new Khwaja Fareed University of Engineering and Technology will be a great achievement and a milestone for promoting higher education in the southern Punjab region. He said that the construction is underway and that the classes are expected to start at the new university campus by 2018. The minister said the establishment of the institute will cost the hefty sum Rs 3.84 billion.

He also revealed information regarding the university’s course duration which, according to him, will be four year bachelors’ degrees in the subjects of engineering, information technology and information and communication technology. Mashood also revealed that the university’s programmes would be later upgraded to offer Master’s degrees and Doctorate degrees.

The establishment of the university is expected to cost over 3.8 billion rupees
The minister said the establishment of the university will greatly help the people of Bahawalpur division who currently need to travel to distant cities in order to get quality higher education.

The university was inaugurated by Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharief in April 2014 and was initially planned to be completed by 2016. The delay has once again been caused due to mismanagement by the government. The work on the construction of walls and roads was suspended back in June.

The KFUEIT is planned to be developed on 200 acres of land In front of Abu Dhabi Road which was previously allotted to Cotton Research Institute (CRI). The land in front of the road was owned by Cholistan Rangers but since they have not been allotted substitute land, it has delayed the construction of university’s area beside the Rangers’ area.

The students who are part of the first session of KFUEIT are currently taking classes in the building of Government College of Technology which has barely enough room to accommodate its own students. The government needs to accelerate the project so that current and new students can study in a proper academic environment.
