Abu Dhabi - Saudi Arabia is rethinking its rejection of a nuclear weapons arsenal in light of recent developments in Iran.
"A Saudi atomic bomb is not an option, which we were thinking of a few days ago," Abdul Rahman Al Rashed, a leading Saudi analyst, wrote in the London-based A-Sharq Al Awsat on Sunday.
"However, we know that there is no other option to deal with Iran, which is armed with nuclear weapons, except through the same balance of terror, which guarded the situation among Moscow, Beijing, and the West, and now between Karachi and New Delhi."

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have just completed the second round high-level defense cooperation talks this year.

Western intelligence sources said Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have signed a strategic defence agreement that could pave the way for Islamabad to help Riyad launch a nuclear programme.
The sources said Pakistan has already been helping Riyad prepare an infrastructure for the procurement and deployment of intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
Saudi Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz has met Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in Islamabad in a wide-ranging session on defence and other bilateral cooperation.
Sultan also met Pakistani Defence Minister Rao Sikandar Iqbal in a discussion on defence and security.
For his part, Sultan called for expanding defence cooperation. He did not elaborate, but officials have termed Pakistan the closest ally of Saudi Arabia.
"Pakistan and the kingdom will have to modernise their people in accordance with the changing international situation and bring themselves to the level of developed nations," Sultan said on April 15.
"Saudi-Pakistani relations have witnessed steady progress, especially at political and economic levels," Musharraf said.
"The government of Pakistan wishes to bolster its strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia, considering its pioneering role in reinforcing peace and security and strengthening Islamic solidarity."
Officials said Pakistan has offered Saudi Arabia a range of military platforms. They said the Saudi Army has begun trials of Pakistan's Khalid main battle tank.
This was the second round of high-level cooperation talks between the two countries. In February, King Abdullah visited Pakistan and signed five cooperation agreements, including in the areas of science and technology.
Officials said this was Sultan's first visit to Pakistan, a major importer of Saudi oil, since becoming crown prince in August 2005. As defence minister, Sultan visited Pakistan in 1981 and 1999.

This is the same old article being reproduced by people who are constipated with Stupidity. Iran's Nuclear Program is there to Balance out Israels Nukes. AQKhan played a smart game by getting Israel off Pakistan's back and letting Iran worry Israel.

Also, the arabs dont mind a Nuclear Iran, infact they welcome it. Egypt should also restart is Nuclear Program and if there are cries and screams from the US about Nuclear disarming ......then let them take the lead with Israel.

I agree every one in middle east should be nuclear armed because of Isreal. They already have 200 warheads.

Either disarm the whole middle-east or disarm it.

no double standards.

Supporting Isreali nuclear programm and opposing middle-east nuclear one will make arabs think that US hates them, or west has declared war on arabs. ( another reason for them to support binladen)

Not only that....but U.K , France actually built Israel's Nuclear infrastructure and provided it with a delivery platform in the shape of the Jericho missiles and the Mirage V. Israel stole Plutonium from American Labs and used it to make its nukes. So...the west illegally gave Israel Nukes to threaten the arab world. Double standards with Iran? hmm

Not only from the US, a whole shipment of french plutonium dissapeared mysterously back in the seventies.
Its believed to have docked in Israel but never proven.

The French built them Dimona...Israel's first Nuclear Reactor disguised as a "Textile Factory "to fool US and Soviet spy satellites. In any case, Israel today has Nuclear missiles aimed at evey Moslem city and Jerusalem is protected by a Nuclear Shield.

Still, I don't think that Saudi or any other ME country should develop a nuke, it will do us no good.
Instead, let the ummah unite and form a bloc empowered by Pakistan which actually can provide the nuclear umbrella within two decades.
What do you think?

Im speechless :p

Pakistan has already provided a de facto umbrella to Saudi Arabia. But keep in mind that Egypt, Libya, Algeria all have Nuclear programs on a small scale. Algeria and Egypt actually have research Nuclear reactors. after Osirak...Iraq had built more than 70 Nuclear sites scattered all over the country. Some of these were as advanced as the ones in Europe or the US. Iran under the shah had a plan to build more than 20 Busher sized (900MGW) Nuclear plants. Israel has more nukes than UK or France . So...the middle east/ south asia is already a contiguous Nuclear Zone....going all the way to China. Japan has enough Plutonium to make more than 50,000 nuclear bombs!

All true, but since the world is sufferring more and more from Islamophobia, and they have their reasons for that, we need an islamic bloc more than ever, atleast a few frontline arab nations in the ME, Asia and Africa should join hands to do something about it.
Saudi Arab, and arab Gulf states have the money, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia are semi industrialsed nations and can provide technology with joint efforts.
Its the only way to have a say in future and to prevent other countries chasing nuclear capability.
I wonder if I stand alone in this vision...
