The two leaders said in a congratulatory message that they are pleased with the important progress made in Vietnam-US relations during Barack Obama’s first term. Cooperation has widely developed in many fields of politics, economics, science and technology, education-training, defence, security, as well as humanitarian activities such as dealing with the aftermath of war.

The two countries have also worked closely at regional and international levels on issues of shared concern, they said.

The leaders of Vietnam expressed their strong belief that mutual relations will be refreshed with President Obama’s second term, promoting peace, stability and development in Asia–Pacific and the world.

Obama ơi: supporters in Vietnam celebrate reelection

The Democrats Abroad in Vietnam had a food budget Wednesday for the post-election. Depending on the results, they could use it to either console themselves over a small dinner, or spread appetizers around a crush of merrymakers.

With U.S. President Barack Obama’s reelection, of course, liberal supporters came out in full force in Ho Chi Minh City (and nabbed a few appetizers).

The victory party at Xu restaurant saw one of the largest turnouts at an event by Dems Abroad, who personalized their chapter of the international partisan group with shirts proclaiming, “Obama ơi!” Plenty of partygoers sported the liberal attire, which features the president donning a conical hat.

One Democrat went so far as to deck out in a Captain America costume. Michael Barrs, 39 and a teacher, said he wore the same outfit for an embassy party in the Dominican Republic in 2008.

Midway through the night, chants of “Four more years!” burst from the center of the restaurant.

In addition to Democrats bar hopping in Hanoi, the festivities at Xu followed a morning of uneasy anticipation. At roughly 11:30 a.m. local time Wednesday, Democrats across Vietnam collectively erupted in rhapsody -- and perhaps relief, upon seeing that the man at the top of their party’s ticket had clinched a second term. Leading up to Obama’s triumph over GOP challenger Mitt Romney, especially in the final days, liberal Americans living here talked of wracked nerves and cautious optimism.

They assembled at Lucca restaurant downtown to watch election returns, while others met at a U.S. consular event in Phu Nhuan District. Though American state department representatives are professionally required to be nonpartisan, crowds at both the consular and Dems Abroad gatherings cheered when CNN projected a blue state, compared with quiet when a red state appeared onscreen.

The consulate had invited both Vietnamese and Americans, regardless of party. And like U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, the Ho Chi Minh City division trotted out kitschy, life-size cut-outs of Obama and Romney at its watch party, where guests were quick to pose and snap photos with both of the now-former candidates.

Who will be U.S Secretary of State in Obama's new cabinet after Mrs. Clinton to retire?

Statement of the Deputy of the National Assembly of Vietnam: Duong Trung Quoc

Like the rest of the world, Vietnam has closely followed the presidential elections in the United States. Our country has a special attitude to the USA. Although tragic pages of the Vietnamese history are associated with this country, we cannot but recognize the role that the US is playing in the region. During his first term as the President, Barack Obama paid great attention to the APR, Southeast Asia and Vietnam in particular.

We appreciate his efforts aimed at normalization and development of relations with Vietnam. We believe that the US presence is a stabilizing factor in the region, especially under the conditions of intensive territorial conflicts in the South China Sea. The USA is the real power that can resist the growing pressure and ambitions of China in the region. The only issue that darkens our relationship is the different assessment of the situation with human rights in Vietnam.

Of the two main political forces of the United States, the Vietnamese are more in sympathy with the Democratic Party, and they are pleased that the Democratic President in will be in power again.

Hope to see more from the US-VN encounter in the future

Yep, Wall Street did toss a big firework welcome for Obama's return yesterday with a plunge of more than 300 points. A free fall down a stiff cliff one might say. Now they all waiting anxiously to see how Obama is going to avoid to fall down another cliff, that's the fiscal cliff.

He gets a second chance. Let wait and see what happens. The challenges he faces are indeed huge.

You guys are really crazy. Because this time this stuff is expected spraying in your face.

That should not be a problem to find a project where we can cooperate. You see Russia is going to build 8 billion USD nuclear power plants for Vietnam.

No, not like your expectations, now they are working together to clean up "agent orange" in Vietnam, a legacy of the war, and step forward for friendship.

Today they are the partners of each other instead of the enemies. This is faster than expected, and we need to say "thanks" to the Chinese for this.

BTW: You have drunk milk melamine too much, right?
