PERTH (Australia), Oct 30 (APP): The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) on Sunday dropped a controversial paragraph from its final communique condemning Turkey over its stance on the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus, following a strng stance adopted by Pakistan. The original paragraph named and condemned Turkey for allegedly violating the UN resolution on controlling the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said it was against the spirit of the 54-member grouping to name any particular country.
He said Pakistan has always supported the resolutions of the United Nations and would continue to do so,however he said it was inappropriate to name a particular country.
British Prime Minister David Cameron and the host Julia Gillard who were chairing the concluding session endorsed the views of Prime Minister Gilani and ruled that the contentious paragraph be dropped from the final document.
The final Communique however does extend “full support and solidarity to the Republic of Cyprus in the exercise of its sovereign rights under international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to explore and exploit the natural resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone”.Pakistan has always been supportive of the Turkish stance on the issue.
