Coast Guard gets first high-speed interceptor boat

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) received its first indigenously designed and constructed high-speed interceptor boat capable of speeds of 40 knots, an official said here Thursday.Designed and constructed by the engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T), this is the first of 36 such boats to be constructed for the Coast Guard at a cost of Rs.9.77 billion.
The boat was delivered and commissioned at Porbandar station of the ICG in Gujarat. The boat is capable of attaining speeds of 40 knots (74 km/hour).

The boat has a full aluminium-alloy body for reduced weight and is powered by twin water-jet propulsion systems to enable quick response for vital coastal surveillance activities.

Besides, these boats can also operate effectively in shallow waters which would be critical for near-shore actions, thus significantly enhancing the country’s coastal security programmes.

Encompassing state-of-the-art technology in designing and construction, L&T will also explore export potential for these boats.

The boats are a part of the overall enhancement of the coastal security measures initiated by the central government in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Indian Coast Guard Ship C-401 Commissioned

December 20, 2012: Indian Coast Guard Ship C-401, the first of the series of 36 interceptor boats (IB) designed and built by Larsen and Toubro (L&T), Surat, was commissioned at Porbander by Air Marshal A.K. Gogoi, Air Officer, Commanding-in-Chief South Western Air Command. The ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Inspector General B.S. Yadav, PTM, Commander Coast Guard Region (North West) and other distinguished guests from various Central and state agencies.


The 30 metres long interceptor boat with 90 tonnes displacement can achieve a maximum speed of 45 knots. The vessel is fitted with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment and medium-range armament. It is designed for high speed interception, close-coast patrol, low-intensity maritime operations, search and rescue and maritime surveillance.

With the commissioning of C-401, the force level of ICG has gone up to 77 ships and boats and with the planned inductions the force level would be doubling by 2018. The interceptor boat C-401 will be based at Mundra under the administrative and operational control of the Commander Coast Guard (North-West) region.

The IB is commanded by Dy Commandant Lakshya Sharma and has a crew of one officer and eleven enrolled personnel.
