COAS, Japanese defence minister hold talks

RAWALPINDI: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa had a video conversation with Defence Minister of Japan Kono Taro on Thursday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

Matters of mutual interest, military-to-military ties, defence and security cooperation and Pakistan’s commitment to Covid-19 were discussed. Defence Minister of Japan Kono Taro appreciated Pakistan’s successful fight against COVID-19 and measures against the locust threat.

The dignitary commended the role of Pakistan for regional peace and stability, especially the efforts of Pakistan Army in battling the scourge of terrorism. Both sides agreed to resume staff level talks as soon as Covid situation improves and enhance bilateral defence cooperation, especially in the fields of training, joint exercises and anti piracy measures. In the end, COAS thanked the Japanese defence minister for offering assistance against locust threat.

I know but it's unusual trip by Japanese defence minister maybe a massage but I doubt Japan also looking to increase her presence at Persian Gulf

It is just diversion, and a useless effort trying to create a perception for china that Pakistan is engaged with them on those matters. However, we have a very open and transparent foreign policy on China, CPEC, and Kashmir's issue(rejecting all India's back-door approach via Japan and Saudi), and no matter what any type of lollipop is offered to us, we are very much profoundly consistent in our core foreign policy thinking.

Very interesting. Given how Japan is part of the USA led Quad against China, having this defense - defense contact between Pakistan and Japan will raise eyebrows at this time. There is not much of a defence relationship between the two countries..

It must have been the product of Pakistan "calling" Japan and not the otherway around.

Japanese these days act as messengers to the US. My take is the FM met our COAS to persuade him to stay away from any hostilities occurring in Ladakh. Definitely there will be some inducements and some veiled threats.

That’s not completely true. South Korea can sell military hardware to Pakistan with the blessing of uncle sams. Japan has recently changed their policy to sell Military hardware but I doubt they will sell anything to Pakistan.

really a question for all of us , are we ready to sacrifices our core Pakistan interest or will play key strategic partner role with china?
