CNN Poll: Americans favor diplomacy against Iran

Washington (CNN) - A majority of Americans don't want the U.S. to take military action to force Iran to shut down its nuclear program, according to a new national survey.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Wednesday indicates that only 17% of the public wants the U.S. to use force, with 60% saying diplomatic or economic action against Iran is the right response, and 22% saying no action should be taken at this time.

The poll's release comes on the same day that Iran touted its mastery of the nuclear fuel cycle, with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, clad in a white lab coat, on hand to load domestically made fuel rods into the core of a Tehran reactor. State-run Press TV broadcast live images of the event, hailed by the Iranians as a major scientific advancement for the Islamic republic.

The first Iranian made nuclear fuel rods, produced by Iranian scientists at the Natanz facility in central Iran, are to be used at the Tehran Nuclear Research Center, which Iran says is used primarily for medical purposes.

Iran's latest activities have spiked tensions with Western powers, which believe Iran's atomic ambitions are focused on building a bomb. In December, the United States as well as several other nations announced increased sanctions against Iran in an international effort to tighten the screws around the suspected nuclear weapons program.

The survey indicates that men are slightly more willing to use military force than women, but that option is unpopular with both genders. Only 21% of men support military action against Iran; for women, that figure drops to 14%.

"This is one issue on which Republicans and Democrats agree," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Republicans are a little more likely than Democrats to prefer military action, but a majority of Republicans, independents and Democrats say they favor economic and diplomatic efforts over a military option."

The CNN poll was conducted by ORC International, with 1,026 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

After all its US taxpayers money, but the Israelis cant be silenced soon, the US have to make Israel patient about diplomacy !!

Not to mention the cost in blood and the high cost of oil for all of the world. If US engages in war with Iran, it will be the last war it will go in to since after that there will be no more USA.

Ah...Yes...Of course...Another 'Mother Of All Battles'...But this time, it will be for real...Iran promised...

The American public, including me, doesn't want war with Iran. The majority of Americans didn't want to attack Iraq either. After Vietnam, the American political elites learned that they must move to an all-volunteer military if they were to have "freedom of action" to engage in a "muscular" foreign policy. You see, very, very few American families are directly impacted by the deaths and wounds suffered in these current wars. So, American policy makers have turned making war into, more or less, an economic "problem" for the American public. Now there is genuine majority opposition on the basis of the cost of these adventures that is constraining the American foreign policy elites. It will be interesting to see if the Israeli lobby can still force through a war of choice (Iran) for Israeli interests, in the face of the huge financial burden it would represent to US taxpayers. I don't think so. The American public absolutely does not want a war with Iran. Iran could certainly help the situation by fully co-operating with the IAEA, defusing the Israeli argument for war.

Iran isn't helping its cause on the world stage.

When you have the supreme leader of your country saying that Israel should be wiped off the face of the Earth, you cannot expect anything but resistance from the West.

I would hate to see a Nuclear weapon in the hands of someone who says that a particular country should be wiped off the face of the Earth.

I mean WTF! Just look at the pure, unadulterated hate. God, even the Pakistanis or Indians don't hate each other so much to say that we'll 'wipe off' the other from Earth.

It is unacceptable.

First of all, get your facts straight, rather than just believing in hearsay. What Ahmadinejad really said was: "The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time."

And second, the countries that are going to stop Iran from just saying things like "wipe Israel off the map" (even though he never said that) are countries that have, wiped people off the map using WMD. So....?

No actually US has never fought any mother of all battles since WWII.All countries you invaded were either bankrupt, tiny, hungry, war torn with no real army.none of them was a big deal.

Wake up buddy. When Iran says Israel should be wiped off the map,it doesn't mean Jews should be wiped off the map.Only idiots and far right wing nuts think that way.Iran says Palestinian should have their land back and have their own government and all of the Jews can continue to live there.Iran says there should be referendum where Palestinians vote for their own destiny and if they recognize Israel,Iran won't hesitate to do the same.If we really wanted to exterminate Jews,we would start from 30,000 living in Iran right now.
Iran wants Israeli regime gone the same way Israel wants Iran's gone, the same way US wanted USSR gone and vice versa, the same way world wanted Nazis gone, the same way India wants Pakistan's gone and vice versa.Get it now?

u cant beat cave men with help of 28 countries and latest weapons then how the hell r u gonna beat a army and their people.

That is so right. They can not beat a few troglodytes there with all their might and now they want to fight with a space launch capable nation. It is laughable.

The truth of the matter is the average Joe bloggs in the US is fed up with war drums and losses of life. Why go to war for the sake of the pressure exerted on them by the Zionists? The USA have enough issues and problems of their own and are being crippled with the cost of non nonsensical wars.

But US is not a democracy, it is a republic which is completely a different thing where in a select group of people indirectly "elected" or selected make decision on behalf of people. So public opinion as long as it does not threaten a civil war inside the US does not matter much.
