Fully equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, modern technology, specialist doctors, nurses and paramedics, Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif yesterday. RIC facility will cater to the needs of patients coming from AJK, KPK and Rawalpindi region in particular and Punjab in general. “In a single day, 10 patients will be able to undergo cardiac surgery in this institute, which is also equipped with angiography machines and a number of operation theatres.

Patients from Hazara, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir can also benefit from this institute. This hospital will provide free treatment in emergency and to the needy patients.” said the CM while talking to media in the premises of RIC. The hospital has four departments, two each for children and adults with separate operation theatres. Noted cardiologist Prof Dr Azhar Mahmood Kayani has been appointed as Chief Executive of the RIC. “Parents of children with heart problems will also have an alternative to treatment in India. 50 specialist doctors will provide treatment to the patients round-the-clock. The RIC also has a modern emergency department with 48 beds. Other departments at the hospital include a 24-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a 14-bed Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

It is the only hospital in the twin cities where the emergency ward has 48 beds, 26 ventilators and five CT angiography machines.” said Dr. Kiyani. Built at a cost of Rs2.8 billion at Rawal Road in a short span of two years, the 272-bed RIC is spread over 80 kanals of land and will be able to handle 400 patients at a time and up to 1,000 daily. While taking a round of different wards of the Cardiology Institute, CM Shahbaz Sharif enquired after the health of several patients who were admitted for treatment. The chief minister consoled them and prayed for their early recovery. He also issued directions to the doctors and nurses besides paramedical staff for taking extra care of the heart patients during the time of their admission and treatment.
