'Cliffside Villagers' Move to New Homes Amid Poverty Alleviation Efforts in SW China

Zhaojue County, one of the last seven counties in southwest China's Sichuan Province to be removed from the country's list of impoverished counties, moved another 31 households of a "cliffside village" to their new homes as part of the province's largest poverty alleviation project through relocating poor population from inhospitable areas. The Zhaojue County of Sichuan's Liangshan ethnic Yi Autonomous Prefecture launched the relocating process of the poverty alleviation project on May 10, starting moving the county's more than 18,000 villagers in 3,194 impoverished households to their new houses, including the 84 households in the "cliffside village" of Atulie'er.

Ethnic Yi girl from the cliff village area, came back to her little hometown after graduating from Columbia University in New York, Many people in US asked her why she decided to go back to her small poor rural hometown despite many famous US companies offered her very good positions. She explained that for a poor ethnic minority village girl like her to get the chance to study first in Peking university and then The University of Oxford and Columbia University , without the government support, it won't be possible no matter how hard she works, she is profoundly thankful of the country and feels obliged to go back to do her part for her still poor hometown.

The new 915-km Chengdu-Kunming Railway opened for traffic on Monday, December. 26 2022, thanks to the completion of the Emei-Mianning section. The new line will improve the railway network in Southwest China, boost economic and social development in ethnic minorities' regions, and promote their opening-up.

The new railway runs through Chengdu, Meishan, Leshan, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture and Panzhihua in Southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture and Kunming in Southwest China's Yunnan Province.
