Chumik Operation 1989

@Pakistan Space Agency
I am attaching US Infantry Magazine of 2010, in which the battle account was published in detail (page 30 -34).

US writer, Capatain Nathan Fry, is full of praise for PA handling of this operatiom - "Naqvi, by issuing “an uncomplicated plan with a wellthought- out intent,” set the proper conditions for his small unit leaders in Operation Chumik — MAJ Bilal and CPTs Kauser and Tariq — to exploit battlefield opportunities in conjunction with traversing the most dangerous mountain terrain in the world. The leaders and soldiers in the operation, well trained in mountaineering skills and seasoned with combat experience, successfully combined tactics with technique to overcome both enemy and terrain."

I understand your point that Pakistan Army won the Chumik Battle valiantly and there's no doubt in my mind about the courage Pakistani soldiers displayed or the tactics, tenacity and strategy Pakistan Army used to kick out the Indians from the area, It's all 110% praise going to Pakistani Army.

What I want to understand is why Pakistani Army did not hold onto the hard won area when Indian Army obviously wanted to hold onto it?

.
So what areas does Pakistan currently hold in the Siachen Glacier? Is it true that India controls the Siachen Glacier?

. . . .
I am not too sure if Pakistan still controls Gyong La Pass, as the rest is Bilafond La and Sia Lia in Indian hands.

. .
It does not.

However, @VCheng, @PanzerKiel and @Pakistan Space Agency have really summed it up. It is a sickening situation.

It is a situation that has led to much suffering, with far more casualties from the weather conditions: pulmonary edema, strokes, frostbitten digits, amputations etc. than from actual fighting on both sides, with all the attendant fallout for families lasting a long time after the deployment is over.

Surely there can be a better way to deal with such territorial disputes. Surely.

Are you talking about the Chumik area we captured?

So what areas does Pakistan currently hold in the Siachen Glacier? Is it true that India controls the Siachen Glacier?

Yes.

. .
Why is Pak officers' casualty rate is so high?

Command and control of troops in this area is very difficult. Therefore you need more officers for smaller bodies of troops.

In plains, an officer can control generally 30 to 50 men spread over an area of around 500 meters.... But not in glaciated terrain.

Can't you have "specialized" NCOs for that role?

. .
so.... india control siachin rest of all is just history .... because you have history with something doesn't mean it has to be yours forever...
hope so if china block indian supply lines in ladakh it would bring an oppertunity for PA to regain sciachin

.
Yup would like to know that @PanzerKiel. While some say argue that Siachen doesn't provide any strategic benefit considering the cost involved to operate from there, but others say it does hold some tactical advantage?

because if we leave them unchecked, they will simply come forward and occupy upto goma base camp !
