Chinese worker killed in Bangladesh construction site clash

Hundreds of Chinese and Bangladeshi labourers clashed at the site of power plant being built south of Dhaka, police said Wednesday, leaving a Chinese worker dead and more than a dozen others injured.

Police said the violence was triggered by the death of a Bangladeshi worker at the site of a China-funded 1,320-megawatt plant, prompting locals to accuse the Chinese of trying to cover up the incident.

At one point, hundreds of Bangladeshi and Chinese workers were fighting at the site -- about 200 kilometres (125 miles) south of the capital -- and more than a dozen were injured, including six Chinese who were taken to hospital.

"One of the Chinese workers later died in the hospital. He had injuries to his head," local police chief Monirul Islam told AFP, adding it took over 1,000 policemen to restore calm.

China is a close ally of Bangladesh, and Chinese state-run and private firms have invested billions of dollars in the South Asian country's infrastructure projects -- mostly in power, energy and transport sectors.

The presence of large numbers of Chinese workers in Bangladesh, as in other countries where Beijing is investing heavily, has caused some tensions with locals, and officials said similar clashes occurred a year ago.

Police said more than 6,000 people -- including some 2,000 from China -- work at the power plant site.

Regional administrator Ram Chandra Das told AFP that authorities have ordered a probe into the incident.

"The situation is now calm," he said, adding no arrests had been made.

In April 2016, four people were killed after police opened fire on villagers protesting against the construction of two China-backed power plants in southeastern Bangladesh.

In October that year Chinese President Xi Jinping made a historic visit to Bangladesh and the two countries signed $20 billion worth of loan agreements.

The latest clashes come just weeks before Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is to visit Beijing.

China's investments in Bangladesh are part of Xi's signature Belt and Road Initiative, a sweeping trillion-dollar infrastructure programme across Asia, Africa and Europe that is viewed with suspicion in the West.

This is why I've been saying for the region more broadly, the best model is not to have chinese workers present on ground. It just causes a social chasm and clash esp in very under-developed areas.

Then you are guaranteed to have the project delayed. I have read a lot of stories by Chinese engineers working in your part of world. Chinese contractors would prefer to hire all locals, but they can't if they want to finish the projects by the set deadline.

Apparently BD ppl just dont work well enough to complete thigns on schedule. I suppose if the foreman etc is chinese, it just make sense to have a body of chinese workers, since there is no language issue.

I just don't think this model will work long term...but let's see.

Short time limit is one of the keys that Chinese engineering corps winning construction tenders worldwide, besides competitive bid, but it is based on the inclusion of disciplined Chinese laborers.

In the video the first witness says that a Chinese worker kicked the Bangladeshi worker named Sabindra Das from a multi-storied building for a minor mistake he made. Second guy says Sabindra Das was alive for 45 minutes and they tried to hospitalized him. When he died the Chinese workers torn his ID card, log-sheet and tried to hide his body anyhow. That's how the clash started.

Not only that the report also says that this is not the first time Chinese tortured Bangladeshi workers, they did it before too. They promised 22k salary, bonus and fixed vacation but only pay 340tk per day instead for working 13 hours. The fourth and fifth guy who are workers say they work putting their life on risk, even have to work on Friday but they don't get paid for the overtime. They kick the workers often and they don't like the Bangladeshi workers. While trying to solve the problem the district commissioner of Potuakhali heard and verified these complaints.

in this second video similar complaints were made by Bangladeshi workers in Padma Bridge construction site where they get paid 300tk wage, they have to pay the rent to stay there, buy food and get medical treatment if accident happen from their own pocket. The company only provide a buckle-less helmet for safety and there's no insurance for the workers. They work 12 hours everyday, no rest day for them either. The Chinese don't monitor their work properly, don't provide proper instructions, more importantly the Chinese don't know English so the communications between them is poor.

And they yell at workers even for minor error and abuse them including their parents. They don't like to let them go to prayer even don't like to give them extra for Jummah prayer, didn't let them to go to Eid prayer take a cut from their wages for it and abuse them. The Chinese say, "No Namaz (prayer)". They don't give bonus. The workers have to walk 1 km to bring drinking water. The monthly wages ranges between 6k-9.5k while PM asked to pay the PMB workers 12k per month. the last guy in the video left the work in construction site because if he had minor error or injuries they told him to go home and cut that day's wage.

That's what these two videos say. now if you treat these workers like shit and then kill one of their co-worker and try to cover it up right in front of them, how do you expect them to stay calm? All the discontent they had, their co-worker's death was just acted like spark in powder keg. And the report says similar clashes occurred a year ago and Chinese workers also have tensions in other countries.

While investigation is not done yet and the matter is only between Bangladeshis and Chinese and no PDF members from either of these country is making any assumption, these two Indian wise-*** poking their nose and saying stupid things without knowing shit like their fathers work in these construction site.

Chinese companies working overseas has very poor work ethics. Every corner of the world they are working, there is serious complaints against them. Giving bad rep to their country itself.

Japanese Companies on the other hand enjoys a good reputation wherever they go.
