NEW DELHI: The 20-day military standoff with China at an altitude of 16,300-feet in Ladakh has ended. After furious activity over diplomatic channels, coupled with two flag meetings on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, the Chinese troops retreated from the Depsang Bulge area to their bases on Sunday evening.

The resolution of the troop face-off came even as preparations were in full swing for foreign minister Salman Khurshid's visit to Beijing on May 9 despite a growing political clamour to cancel the trip. Now, the visit will go ahead as scheduled, in preparation for the May 20 visit to India by Chinese premier Li Keqiang.

There was no immediate word on the conditions decided for the mutual withdrawal of the troops, confronting each other on the heights since April 15. The earlier refusal by the Chinese to withdraw its soldiers from northern Ladakh, where they had pitched tents 19 km inside Indian territory, has created a national security scare in India.

Both sides held the fourth and fifth flag meetings between local commanders, one after the other, over the weekend before the withdrawal began at about 7.30 pm on Sunday.The first three flag meetings, on April 18, 23 and 30, at Spanggur Gap between the Daulat Beg Oldi and Chushul sectors had failed to break the deadlock.

The Chinese side had been insisting that India dismantle its security and monitoring posts built in Chumar and other areas. India has resisted this because Chumar is considered to have strategic significance, particularly since Indian soldiers can monitor troop movements across the Line of Actual Control from there.

We all know after the Indian Army took a step back eventually India would give in Chinese demands. You lost all bargaining leverage. That article is just putting it in a slightly less humiliating fashion for Indians. Less humiliating than the way Indian army retreated from its own territory simultaneously with the PLA.

No, both sides withdrew from DBO.

This means that India never really believed that DBO was 20 km inside pure Indian territory, and that they now agree that DBO is a part of the disputed region.

Since previously, the Indian government was adamant that DBO was not in the disputed region but rather fully within Indian territory.

No, it means that until the lines are formally drawn, india has decided to not get aggressively close to the chinese areas and vice versa. There is no implication on ownsership in this action.

That article is just being polite. On day one, PLA offered to withdraw if India dismantles the bunkers. We all know PLA strong-armed India with an advantage on the ground.

No politeness intended. PLA withdrew after they were informed that their actions were against Geneva Convention Rules on acceptable action taken in respect of disputed territories. Indian army bunker construction has been happening since the 1980s. The PLA realised that world opinion was against them. That is the long and short of it. If the PLA wanted to protest against Indian army action then it had to do so via the world body, namely the UNO. Not just erect tents willy nilly on disputed territory. Thank heavens that China has a responsible leadership

India didn't agree to dismantle its bunkers rather decided to go slow on construction.....
However, India did not agree to stop modernisation of Daulat Beg Oldi and Nayoma airfields in Ladakh, which according to China poses a strategic threat to Karakoram Highway....hahahahhaah looser!!
