Chinese troops detain five Indians in Ladakh

In an incident that could raise the temperature along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Chinese troops detained five Indians well inside the Indian territory in Chumar area of Ladakh.

The People's Liberation Army troops apprehended the five Indian nationals along with their cattle inside the Indian territory in Chumar area, a remote village on Ladakh-Himachal Pradesh border, which China claims as its own territory.

The Chinese personnel, who took them to their camp across the LAC, later handed over the five men to the Indian authorities.

The Army Headquarters has sought to play down the incident saying that the matter was resolved amicably, but sources said the Chinese side relented only after the Indian Army authorities sought a flag meeting on the matter and warned that the issue would be raised at a higher level.

Incidents of incursions by the Chinese army have been reported regularly from the Indo-China border, but this is possibly the first time when the detention of Indian citizens by Chinese army after entering Indian territory has been reported.

The incident has come months after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signed the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement with China in October, seeking to prevent any flare ups between the armies of the two countries on the LAC.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony had recently warned that the new border pact does not guarantee that nothing will happen in these areas in future.

Chumar has been one of the most active areas on the LAC in terms of transgressions by the Chinese troops.

Located 300km from Leh, Chumar was also the bone of contention during the 21-day military face-off in April-May that saw the two rival armies pitching tents and indulging in banner drills after PLA troops intruded 19km into Indian territory in the Depsang Bulge area of the Daulat Beg Oldi sector.

Right now Defacto MC Mohan line is border , While Indian told China give its version of Map of border which China didn't give till now. So no one know till where china claim its land .
