Chinese Trains, Indian Trains

actually Beijing subway stations are better than shanghai's,due to the Olympic Games in 2008.Beijing subway is the world class subway system

BEIJING SUBWAY
Beijing aiming for world's longest subway system - SkyscraperCity

Every Beijing subway station has a theme to represent surrounding area's culture ,history.all indepentently designed,it makes Beijing subway stations different from other subway stations in China.

To a train-enthusiast like me it is sad to see another thread turned into pi$$ing contest. It would have been great had we talked about the sights, the sounds, the food along these two trips in the OP. I once traveled from South Carolina to Toronto to Vancouver--almost all the trip via trains and loved it so much, made lasting friendships. Nothing can match long train trips except perhaps long cruise trips.
One day--may be not in my lifetime, sadly--we will go from Kerala to Khyber, from Karachi to Shanghai, in trains and in cars, visa-free, much like what the Europeans do now. But for that we have to get rid of the myopia which plagues us.

there are some news about Russia,China,US building a railway from Beijing to New York.

this is not practical. HSR is only practical for short flight trips like an 1 hour flight trip or less. It doesn't make much sense to go through the security for an 1 hour flight and then have to wait in the airport for the same time as a 15 hour international trip.

Bring in private railway enterprise, india will have its HSR very soon....don't count on Govt.

Russia has trans Siberia railway, take that from Beijing to Paris,it took two weeks,ha,not time efficiency, more like a tour train.

Actually Chinese HSR is pretty much insolvent. Their interest costs are much more than the revenue from passengers.

India does not need an HSR network, what is required is dedicated freight lines. Once that is done, the passenger train speed can be increased to about 160 kmph without too much extra investment. For long distances (1000 km and higher) air travel is the best option, we should work on making flights cheaper.

ha,then enjoy that way ,in China we still like to enjoy clean, fast, modern ,comfortable train rides.money should be spent for the benifits of the public.

But at the same time, the HSR leaves the "old style" lines be able to fully focusing on freight transportation which accelerate economic growth. Transport has long been the bottle neck of development.

True, but the capital costs for HSR are so high that the passenger fares can never cover even the interest.

The market is telling you that the economic value of high speed passenger rail is not that high.

If freight trains get their own lines, the existing lines can handle trains going at about 160 kmph with much lower additional investment. That is good enough for short journeys.

For long journeys, it would be better to invest on making air travel cheaper and faster - good metro links to city airports, more runways, and lots more high capacity medium haul jets (say with 600 seats, and 3000 km range). That will make the the trip faster than by HSR.

One thing i want to add Indian Railway system is highly subsidized Railway system in the world, you can not imagine Rs 230/-(less than $5) sleeper ticket for 900 km in any part of the world except India and this is the reason of the railways dirty service.
