India need not be ‘jealous’ of close China-Bangladesh ties: Chinese media

New Delhi need not be “jealous” of Beijing and Dhaka’s increasing friendship but could use this as an opportunity to improve bilateral relations with China during the BRICS summit in Goa this weekend, the state-run Global Times has suggested.

In an article on Wednesday, the tabloid argued that a growing relationship between China and Bangladesh – where President Xi Jinping will be on October 14 a day before reaching Goa – will convince India to not only to recalibrate ties with South Asian countries but also with China.

“India will not need to be jealous of an increasingly close relationship between Beijing and Dhaka, because the improvement of local infrastructure and the overall economic ecology in Bangladesh will create favorable external conditions for connecting with markets in India, China and Southeast Asia,” the usually hawkish Global Times said.

In a long-winded argument it said, “However, it would not necessarily be a bad thing if an increasingly close relationship between China and Bangladesh puts some pressure on New Delhi to rethink its strategy in this region and encourages it to put more effort into improving relations with China during the upcoming meeting between President Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit.”

Despite India’s close ties with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Maldives in the region, the tabloid which is affiliated to the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) mouthpiece, People’s Daily, presumes that such ties don’t exist now.

“There have been misconceptions in India that China may feel unhappy if South Asian countries such as Bangladesh forge close ties with India and that China feels the need to build closer ties with Bangladesh,” it said.

The article also refers to views that Beijing is trying to checkmate New Delhi’s influence in the region.

“There is a popular view that China is trying to carve out for itself a pre-eminent role in South Asian affairs and that it intends to contain India’s rise by seeking closer cooperation with countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Myanmar,” the article added.

“In this regard, some people believe China’s One Belt and One Road initiative has been used as a political tool to achieve Beijing’s goals,” it said.

But Indians are “flattering” themselves by assuming that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is aimed at balancing New Delhi’s influence in South Asia, it said.

“Some Indian people may mistakenly flatter themselves when they think China’s BRI is aimed at balancing India’s influence. The initiative, connecting more than 4 billion people in 65 countries, is not about marking Beijing’s strategic circle on the subcontinent of South Asia, but instead represents an open-ended initiative that welcomes the participation of numerous other countries,” the GT article argued.

Compared with India, some other countries, including Bangladesh are showing a greater willingness to cooperate with China in this regard.

“Bangladesh’s geographic location makes it an irreplaceable link connecting India and China, and efforts to boost the local economy and improve infrastructure in Bangladesh could bring development momentum for the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor.”

Xi’s upcoming visit to Bangladesh is likely to raise bilateral relations to new heights and result in a large investments and loans to improve local infrastructure, the article said.

What is the interest rate?? As I have researched Pakistani ppl are seeing CPEC as financial imperialism of CHINA on PAKISTAN.

These are open question:
1. What is the effective interest rate of which Pakistan will pay to CHINA?? (Remember Japan has offered 0.5%. Japan will offer more than 1 trillion yen ($8.11 billion) in loans to construct India's Rs 98,000 crore fast train, according to the report. )

China-Pakistan interest rate is 8% to 17% as per Hamid mir and Musharraf.

2. What about labor? Will china provide job to Pakistani worker??

As per report , 8000+ chiniese worker are in Paksitan today, To save them from terrorist 8000+ pakistani security forces are deployed (12000+ more are under training). The cost of security will be paid by Pakistani awam.

3. Why Pakistan is guaranteeing "17-18% Guaranteed return to China on power project? what if this project cant generate that much revenue, will pakistani Awam be taxed for paying China??

Great Job China!!! :china:

Musharraf said many other things too, mostly about India... should we agree to agree on all of them now? :partay:

Well frankly speaking, we already have a good IT and Telecom infrastructure in Pakistan. Both Urban and rural Pakistan are all well connected perhaps the only infrastructure might be required in the under construction city Gwader itself.

Not that high about 8-10% but about 4-5%. But debt assumption is normal since even for the local players, the debt component dominates the investment projects (~10-20% equity vs 90-80% debt). But consider this, for these projects, would Pakistan be able to raise funds from other sources and to this magnitude? I guess the answer would be plain no.
2. What about labor? Will china provide job to Pakistani worker??
For initial work yes, but if they keep the large amount of Chinese, the labor costs will shoot because Chinese would not work at the same of less for what they work in China. So ultimately locals will be engaged.

That's true, these costs are quite indirect and not accounted for as such

The first time cost is about 140-150 Billion PKR. That's about 1.5 Billion US Dollars.

3. Why Pakistan is guaranteeing "17-18% Guaranteed return to China on power project? what if this project cant generate that much revenue, will pakistani Awam be taxed for paying China??
The power policy allows anyone 18% Dollar IRR for setting up a power plant. Its not just available for Chinese. All the major corporate groups are rushing for setting up power plants for a good reason. The returns are astonishing in power generation.

the OP says 5 Billion PKR Investment in Telecom sector but You Have to Copy Paste the same thing on every post ..Right ! Too much #burn ?

Also the sources you are quoting are exaggerating things for thr own issue ... but regardless of this the same sources have said much more stuff about many other issues ... are we considering it all now valid or still cherry picking ?

here you go for the Loan Computation for starters it is 1.6 Slashed from 3% original for Infrastructure Project,,, and work is underway to bring it down to 1% .. (For power Generation Projects it is more so of Investment thn Loans (the Power Firm will take loan on 5-6% from Exim bank and others, while Pakistan govt will buy the electricity), albeit Rates could be higher but it will bring in overall positive impact to economy

China Counters India's $2 Billion With $24 Billion For Bangladesh
World | Reuters | Updated: October 14, 2016 09:52 IST

HIGHLIGHTS
1. China is set to sign off on loans worth over $24 billion to Bangladesh

2. Xi Jinping's visit is the first by a Chinese President in 30 years

3. China looks set to go well beyond India's investments in Bangladesh

China is set to sign off on loans worth over $24 billion to Bangladesh during President Xi Jinping's visit today, Dhaka's biggest foreign credit line to date that will help it build power plants, a seaport and railways.

Xi Jinping's trip, the first by a Chinese president in 30 years, is aimed at boosting China's involvement in infrastructure projects at a time when India is pushing investments of its own in Bangladesh, a country New Delhi considers its area of influence.

Japan, helped by India, has also got involved in Bangladesh, offering finance at low interest rates to build a port and power complex, sharpening competition for influence in the country of 160 million people.

China plans to finance around 25 projects, including a 1,320 megawatt (MW) power plant, and is also keen to build a deep sea port, Bangladesh junior finance minister MA Mannan said.

"Xi's visit will set a new milestone. (A) record amount of loan agreements will be signed during the visit, roughly $24 billion," he told Reuters.

Among the proposed projects are highways and information technology development, he said. "Our infrastructure needs are big, so we need huge loans."

China's Jiangsu Etern Co Ltd signed a deal worth $1.1 billion to strengthen the power grid network in Bangladesh, the company said on Thursday.

Beijing is especially keen to revive a plan to build a deep sea port in Sonadia which has been on hold for years, officials said.

The Chinese President is visiting Bangladesh on his way to a BRICS summit of the world's leading emerging economies in Goa.

His trip comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading efforts to boost ties with neighbouring countries, from Sri Lanka to Nepal and Bangladesh, by offering them a share of India's fast-growing economy.

Last year Prime Minister Modi announced a $2 billion credit line for Bangladesh during a visit to Dhaka, but China looks set to go well beyond that.

Zhao Gancheng, director of South Asia Studies at Shanghai Institute for International Studies, said both India and China supported development in Bangladesh, and that it did not have to be one or the other.

"I really don't think there is a zero sum game going on in Bangladesh between China and India. Bangladesh welcomes both Chinese and Indian investment..." said Mr Zhao.

Bangladesh has backed Xi Jinping's "One Belt, One Road" initiative to boost trade and transport links across Asia and into Europe, seeing it as an opportunity to lift growth.

India has reservations about the plan, amid worries that it is an attempt to tilt the balance in Asia in China's favour.

"Beijing had also proposed an economic corridor linking Bangladesh, Myanmar, China and northern India, but New Delhi did not seem keen on the idea," Mr Zhao said.

"Bangladesh has an enormous need for investment, and I don't think it's going to become a site for strategic competition, a game between the great powers or a pawn," he said
