Come on with that logic the US military with its worldwide presence could sink every one of your cargo ships around the world because your military has no global presence to protect them.
Ships act differently during wartime.
Well said, if this was wartime that sub would be at the bottom of the ocean.

They have no significant air assets outside their borders. Their ships are sitting ducks to our aircraft.

You have nowhere to hide. Except maybe India.
Lol United States created the so called 'Freedom of Navigation' for itself, to give itself unrestricted access to anywhere in the world under the guise that they are upholding some type of 'freedom'-- yea, freedom for the U.S. to do as it pleases.
Well now similarly other countries are such as China are also doing the same against the USA and the USA is shaking.
Just three days after the submarine incident, the U.S sent a warship to pass within less than 12 miles of one of China's artificial islands as a challenge to Beijing's claims that the new islands are Chinese territory.
""The truth is, we track them tracking us, and we learn about their capabilities," said Robert Daly, who directs the Kissinger Institute on China at the Woodrow Wilson Center.
Chinese submarines are growing in number, but they're still relatively noisy," he pointed out. "They're at least a generation behind us. And when they track us, we find out what they are capable of."
If you're in international waters, what is the problem with a Chinese sub taking a peek near a US surface group? Russians used to do so all the time and vv. It is nothing magical to do, it proves nothing. Hence there isn't any loss of face. It means China says 'oh look, we have submarine'. As reported, the US group detected it. Although I would not have revealed that information if I were an American (I would want the Chinese to have to guess about that), what else can the US do but detect if? It can't very well go attack it! But you can rest assured that a US carrier group is accompanied by an SSN and that could do stuff underwater we would never know about (e.g. harrass the Kilo while submerged) unless the USN tells us or PLAN provides proof. So, BLABLABLA as far is face is concerned.US official doing his best to save face.

BS. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. If this were war time, the Kilo would have been attacked by helicopter as soon as detected and as far out as possible. In open ocean, it would be very unlikely to ever get into torpedo range (25-30km, for the longest range torps that China has). The submarine tracked the carrier at torpedo range and surfaced to give the USN sailors a little surprise. If this was a war, the carrier would be sunk.
There is no face loss to begin with because nothing significant happened. It is a major attempt to save face, as it seems.
Other than this, I agree, these moves - counter moves are often different in nature than they would be between two small powers.

The MH-60R Seahawk multi-mission helicopter, operated by the US Navy is a further development of the SH-60B Seahawk that is now phased out. The fully loaded and armed MR-60R has a range of 454 km / 282 miles / 245 NMi and a combat radius of 93 km, with time on station.

Definitely, in war time, the situation would be a lot different for either side. The point is, absent a major provocation, the situation will oscillate between cold peace and limited confrontation.
Thanks for bringing up another spanking of USN by PLAN.
The point is that the presence of a Chinese Kilo says .... nothing. Well, except for the fact that they have them.Definitely, in war time, the situation would be a lot different for either side. Nonsense. Since except by firing a torpedo at the sub or ramming, no USN ship has a way of actually stopping a submarine from being present. An SSN can do different things, that's a different ballgame. Thanks for bringing up another spanking of USN by PLAN.
