The designer of the system - Ma Weiming (马伟明), graduated from Naval Engineering Institute in 1982; in 1996 received his doctorate at the University of Tsinghua. Known primarily as a specialist in electric power systems, and submarines. He is currently a professor at the Naval Engineering University of PLA.

Due to his achievements in 2001 he was elected a member of China Academy of Engineering Sciences. Recently, Central Military Commission of the PRC decided to award him for the successful development of an electromagnetic catapult for an aircraft carrier.

It is noted that the length of the catapult is more than 100 m, it is a linear motor with a complex system of energy supply and management. High-performance power storing and power conversion systems, allows it to launch an aircraft within 45 second. To disperse the heaviest aircraft carrier-based catapult must expend about 120 megajoules. The system of accumulation and energy storage has a capacity of 140 megajoules, or power of 3.1 MW, and including energy losses - up to 4 MW. Given the presence of four catapults on the ship, as well as other systems, the ship will require a source of energy up to 60 MW.

So, apparently, this is the indication that the future Chinese aircraft carrier may have a nuclear power plant.

This may or may not be a prototype EMALS... We are all still speculating. :cheers:

Prefessor Ma just got awarded in last year, so it is definitely the success of a new product that is related to the electric power, it may be the railgun or the EMALS.

We will find out later about the indigenous carriers. :coffee:

Initially, they had the plan to launch the indigenous carrier in 2012-2013, but now they want to skip directly to the nuclear powered one with EMALS, consider the oil price, a conventional one will be a gas guzzler.

So it is better to be late with a quality one than rushed with a cheap quality one. :coffee:

Correct, Also we are working on a railgun.

The aircraft carrier will be one of our naval platforms for our future information warfare, it will not be the weapon against the weapon anymore, instead it will be the system (China) against the system (USA).

Other small nations couldn't imagine how to fight against our army without having its own proper system, but purchasing few fancy weapons will be absolutely useless against our entire system of the information warfare. :coffee:

Indeed, It is primarily for the nuclear supercarrier but due to Tibet altitude, it takes longer runway for fighter to take off, so with cataputs system, we can shortened the take off...we can basically reduce the size of airfield.

We should call "India centric airfiel design" :D as how they call Agni-5 "chinese-centric missle"
