The micro-blog of Chinese President Hu Jintao attracted more than 10,000 fans on People.com.cn in just 24 hours starting from Sunday despite not a single word being posted, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily.

The micro-blog carried a profile that said: General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

The identity of the micro-blog account holder on T.people.com.cn was confirmed by the website's receptionist service system on Sunday as belonging to the president of China.

Public sentiment about Hu Jintao's presence on a public web domain has been overwhelming. The number of registered fans on the micro-blog surpassed 12,400 overnight and they are very active online.

A blogger named Shao Mingbo wrote, "I will keep awake tonight to see who can be the first lucky follower of the account."

An hour later, a blogger named "feiquanmingqin" was hailed as the first follower of President Hu's micro-blog.

The person wrote, "Calm down, calm down, in response to other blogger's congratulations."

Some bloggers even took the chance to send New Year wishes to Hu.

Blogger 'dothink' wrote, "I wish President Hu a happy New Year."

A blogger named 'Jiubai' wrote, "I come here to follow President Hu."

Micro-blogs are shorter versions of regular blogs, but only consist of a sentence or two to share the writer's personal feelings and opinions.

This is not the first time a top Chinese official has gone online to communicate with citizens. On June 20, 2008, President Hu talked to Net users via the People's Daily online forum, the first time that China's top leaders have conducted direct online communications with web users. Chinese netizens later started addressing him as "Our Netizen Hu Jintao."

Premier Wen Jiabao's profile also showed up on a social networking website back in the same year.

Hmm... Interesting.

The only question is how can we know this is not fake, given so many fake things out there these days?
