CHINESE PRESIDENTIAL ENVOY TO ATTEND INAUGURATION SRI LANKAN HAMBANTOTA PORT

Chinese Presidential Envoy Sang Guowei will attend the inauguration ceremony of President Mahinda Rajapaksa next week, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said today.

Sang, vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, will visit Sri Lanka from November. 17 to 20 as a guest of President Rajapaksa.

President Rajapaksa will be sworn in for his second term as president on November 19th.

Sang will also attend the launching ceremony of Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka, which was built by China Harbor Engineering Company.

Sri Lanka Navy commander visits “Wenzhou” warship

Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe and Rear Admiral Dissanayake, Commander-in-chief and chief of staff respectively of the Sri Lanka Navy, and the party led by them visited the “Wenzhou” guided-missile frigate of the Chinese naval escort taskforce which was berthing at the Colombo Port for rest. The two sides conducted friendly exchanges.

During the visit to the “Wenzhou” guided-missile frigate, Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe warmly welcomed the warship of the Chinese naval escort taskforce to berth at the Colombo Port and spoke positively of the Chinese navy’s participation in escort action in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off the Somali coast. He said that the peoples of China and Sri Lanka had maintained profound friendship and the two militaries of the two countries had kept good exchange and cooperative ties. He hoped that the two navies of the two countries would further strengthen cooperation and enhance the friendship.

The commanding officers of a destroyer flotilla under the East China Sea Fleet and the “Wenzhou” guided-missile frigate of the PLA Navy expressed their gratitude to the convenience and assistance given by the Sri Lanka Navy during the berth of the “Wenzhou” warship at the Colombo Port.
